  1. As someone said prior to my post, Marriott seems like a good possibility. A full-fledged Marriott downtown would be nice. Perhaps a Marriott Marquis. Other names that might be possibilities include either Westin or Sheraton (Starwood NEEDS a presence downtown), maybe a Grand Hyatt... I can't really think of many others who would typically build or operate large convention hotels.
  2. I agree those numbers are unlikely for that size lot in that location. I'm thinking the "$900,000-1.5 million" was their projected sale price for completed homes. Hard to believe a journalist could write so sloppily, isn't it? ;-)
  3. and also, I believe, the movie "High Anxiety"
  4. I remember the name John Portman. I think he designed at least some of the Hyatt Regency atrium hotels. And wasn't the Houston one the first of those?
  5. I don't see the point of a station exclusively for game days. There is a station planned for that neighborhood anyway. In fact, I think it is planned for right next door (or possibly under) the stadium location we've been given.
  6. Well apparently, it was nothing more than a silly rumor (perhaps a bit more than just a rumor, but very outdated... the proposed Hyatt expansion into the Sheraton was in the news several years back). In any event this new remodel announcement is not at all similar or in any way related to the "rumored" expansion into the old Sheraton building.
  7. Yea, I've always thought the exact same thing about that building. But even with all the change in my change jar, I haven't been able to come up with the seven figure asking price, let alone the rehab costs ;-)
  8. Intersting. And that second word is not "Cotton" either. That looks like an "H" in the second line.
  9. They (the Chron) printed a map. Could not be more specific.
  10. But did they "break" those location stories prior to their actual announcement by the Sports Authority? In other words did they do anything beyond print the press release? Nobody denies the Chron can usually reprint a press release accurately. It's when they try to actually find some news on their own that they have trouble.
  11. That would come under the (2) category (Mayor White f'd up). Interesting. But of course the rail line is planned for Capitol. I would think they could shift the rail line to Texas just about as easily and make the current map work as well.
  12. I've been thinking about this stadium location and just wanted to throw this out there for discussion. As has been noted, the location given by the Chron would block the proposed Metro Southeast/East End tracks coming into downtown. I can see three possible answers to the question of "what the hell is going on here?" ;-) (1) The Chron got the location wrong. (and betting on the Chron getting its facts wrong is usually a pretty safe bet) (2) Mayor White has totally f'd up... This strikes me as unlikely. He seems like a pretty sharp guy with good instincts. (3) Metros plans for that area have changed/are changing. Is it possible that we could be going subway with that line after all???? Discuss amongst yourselves. ;-)
  13. That was the most interesting column Sarnoff has filed in years. But there was no "teaser" about the old Texaco building. Just a statement recounting the fact that it was supposed to have been redeveloped into a Ritz-Carlton back in the 90s. Either before the work started or while it was happening, the project changed to a Renaissance Hotel. And then work stopped completely.
  14. The BRT version would have gone down Capitol and Rusk, but you are correct that the LRT is slated for Capitol.
  15. In an effort to avoid further confusion, is it possible to correct the name on this thread? The development is called "River Oaks District"
  16. In my experience, they are VERY nice hotels. I have stayed in the Parker Le Meridien in NYC and I had lunch once in the Le Meridien in NOLA (which apparently is no longer a Le Meridien). There also used to be one in Dallas. IIRC, I think there may have been one in Houston, way back in the oil boom days of the late 70s/early 80s. It looks like the chain had fallen on hard times before Starwood bought them fairly recently.
  17. They should have a push-cart version of a taco truck in Discovery Green (Houston's version of New York's hot dog and pretzel vendors).
  18. Christof raises some very real issues there. Hopefully, the Chronicle got the location wrong.
  19. Maybe the Austin book was a more well-done version. IIRC, I picked up that Houston book a few years back, eager to buy it. But after thumbing threw it briefly, I put it back on the shelf because I thought it was too lame to bother with.
