When Trammel Crow announced Discovery Tower they said construction would begin in the 1st Quarter of '08. Since then, I have read in at least one place that construction was to begin this month (Jan '08).

There is plenty of room for both. American Apparel's location in the building is only about 18% of the available retail space, according to Wulfe's site plan.

I think the renderings pretty clearly show only 2 stories on that block. But if anyone has any remaining doubts, go look at the Leasing Plans. There are only 2 stories on that block. -
You are right. It is pretty much impossible for it to be a suburban-style building. Seems like it would probably have to be 15 stories... maybe?

No giddiness about the delay of the building. I fully expected it to be delayed and warned that Dallasites should prepare themselves for slippage in the earlier-scheduled Fall 2007 construction start. (I am, however, enjoying the opportunity to expose the apparent lies that some from Dallas attempted to foist on us regarding this building.) I too expect it will eventually built, or at least some high-rise structure will be built in its place. The tower structure doesn't actually include any retail, but it is a mix of office, hotel, and condos. The condos would be coming into an overbuilt high-end condo market; the office space would be coming into an overbuilt office market; the hotel would be coming into an overbuilt Dallas hotel market. The result: No surprise that they have delayed until autumn 2008. I would not be at all surprised if there are further delays.

Well, despite assurances "confidently" given us by someone "working in the building industry . . . in Dallas" that the construction of the tower was well underway back in February, including the drilling of piers on the site for both the tower and garage portions, and despite the crazed claims by several other of our Dallas friends to the effect that the tower structure was under construction many months ago... it now seems that construction on the tower portion is not even scheduled to begin until October or November of 2008! (This according to a recent post on the DallasMetropolis board) And those piers under the tower portion of the site?? Yea the portion where they are still parking cars?? ? . ? . ? Odd, very odd.

Could you (or anyone else) provide us with a dozen or so examples of the mixed-use developments that are apparently scattered all about the country, in every city except for Houston? I have questioned people about this oft-heard refrain on previous occasions, and the examples provided have been sparse, to say the least (consisting pretty much of Mockingbird Station). -

The score of a city is equal to the sum of all building heights (in m, without spires) after substraction of the minimum of 90m/295ft for each building. Freestanding towers (i.e. thin structures with no floors over most of their height) count for half their height. -
Actually, the "last available raw space is currently for sale in The Huntingdon. $3,999,000 for 8,864 square feet ($451 per square foot, and again, that is "raw" space.)

Far be it from me to defend the Chronicle. But there actually is a map link in the story. (It's not very detailed, but it gives a decent idea of where it will run) Also, the story said: "Vehicles headed downtown will be able to exit onto U.S. 59 east of downtown, and then take the Hamilton exit into downtown, said Mike Perez, who is heading the project for the toll road authority. Agreed, but we are WELL on the way. Roughly two blocks of surface lot is already gone with the Discovery Green development. If the Embassy Suites goes forward (and I don't think we have any particular reason to doubt that it will), we will only have one block left with surface lots on both sides and one-half block with surface lot on one side (behind Josephine's). Not so bad, considering HP is still almost a year from opening. -
Just received this "News Flash" from Metro: Recent news reports about METRO and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) may have left the false impression that two of Houston's five proposed light rail lines are in jeopardy. They are not. We do not expect delays on the start of construction, which is scheduled for next spring. The Federal government already has the vast majority of information needed to evaluate these light rail projects. METRO is working aggressively to provide the federal government the remaining documentation requested.

Well, yes, I guess if you want to go back to when it was nothing more than a dream and a piece of property. The first announced proposal and the first release of renderings were for two apartment/condo towers and one office tower. Never did they announce a plan for a hotel or even mention the idea publicly, until these interviews that have occurred after construction started. The "other tower" that was first asked about in this thread was indeed another apartment/condo tower, not a hotel. -

The demolition, the construction... all the additional people working downtown (when it's finished and occupied) and the cars they bring with them. The whole thing is a poorly-planned fiasco that will inconvenience far more people than it conveniences.
