  1. Atlanta's Olympic stadium was reconfigured for baseball following the Games, as originally planned.

BTW, Sydney's Telstra Stadium seated 110,000 for the Games.  After the Games, it was reconfigured, and now seats 80,000.

and is the Sydney stadium "going to waste" as Arche told us they all are?

  2. A lot of other well known, historic retail names will disappear as a result of this merger as well. Filene's (I wonder which will survive in downtown Boston where Filene's and Macy's are directly across the street from each other)

The Macy's name will survive in downtown Boston, but they have not decided yet whether it will be in the current Filene's location or the current Macy's location.

  3. Regarding "converting" the Macy's building into apartments, SURELY what they really mean is building an apartment tower on top of the building, or clearing the site and constructing a new apartment tower. I've thought for years that the Galleria should have a residential component, and was always surprised that Hines never added a residential tower.

One other thought regarding the Macy's store. What the Houston papers have totally missed is that Federated has also said that they are still evalutating the 68 locations that are slated to close, and that some of them may ultimately be converted to Bloomingdale's.

  4. I explain it clearly. Macy's location will be a Class A Apartments. Foley's will remain at their currect location in the Galleria, cause the Foley's store is a newer store in a prime location.

They haven't mention Foley's will be turn into a Macy's in the Galleria.

    y'all getting it mixed up.

No. You are wrong Semipro. ALL Foley's stores will be re-branded as Macy's stores. ALL. Every single one of them. They currently have no plans to close any Foley's stores, including downtown, Northwest Mall, Sharpstown, etc. etc. They will close the store in the Galleria that is currently called Macy's and the store in the Galleria that is currently known as Foley's will be re-branded as a Macy's.

Now, do you have a source or link for this nonsense of turning the current Macy's store into Class A apartments? That seems HIGHLY unlikely, given the floor sizes and lack of windows.

  5. Even if Houston was to get the Olympic Bid in 2016 - they would probably have to build and olympic stadium - since by that time the Astrodome will be Funland or something like it if not demolished - and Reliant Stadium will be approaching 20 years of age.  Every Olympic bid (that really caught the attention of the IOC) had new stadiums.  They dont want Olympic Stadium to be a 18 year old 69,000 seat, football stadium with terrible accoustics.

Face it people as many good things that would happen if Houston was awarded the Olympics would the millions spent on a single event be worth all the head ache?  Just ask Sydney, Athens, Atlanta, which have large sporting event centers mostly going to waste since there really arent many tenants to fill a 120,000 seat stadium.

I for one think they should permantly KEEP the games in Greece.  It was there idea anyway.  They have great facilities and are close to 450 million sport fans.

I don't know for sure about the others, but Atlanta does not have a 120,000 seat stadium, empty or otherwise. Nor do they have any large stadium "going to waste" after their Olympics.

  6. How can they offer gas cooktops in the kitchen?

Every condo I've looked at has electric cooktops and when I ask way, I'm always told that gas cooktops aren't allowed in multistory developments under the code requirements.

I think you've been lied to. I'm pretty sure I've seen some gas cooktops in highrise buildings in Houston. The Mercer advertises gas cooktops in their units.

  7. Does anyone know what's going to happen to the Chevron building downtown, their main location downtown before they bought 1500? Do they intend to hold on to that building or sell it off?

Chevron sold the "old" Chevron Building to Crescent, the owner of Houston Center. They have renamed it Fulbright Tower, in recognition of the primary tenant, the law firm of Fulbright and Jaworski.

  8. Where at on Main St.? The Army Reserve Depot for the Houston area is on OST just east of Fannin.

The National Guard Armory is off of Westheimer Parkway just west of SH6. Then there is Ellington Field where the Marine, Navy, and Airforce Reserves (along with the Texas Air National Guard) are all stationed.

On a tangent - If they do consolidate all our reserves to Ellington Field, then that will leave a huge facility on OST vacant. Of course, at this point, that's about the only thing left standing - that and the V.A. hospital.

The consolidation at Ellington is part of a deal with the Texas Medical Center... the existing facilities/land on OST will become part of the Texas Medical Center, allowing room for further expansion of the University of Texas Research Park.

  9. That was one of two highly inaccurate and irresponsible headlines in the Chronicle JUST TODAY. I thought that paper was getting better, but it seems to be becoming more and more of a joke. and Nancy Sarnoff seems to have been infected a bit by the "all negative news all the time" malady of Ralph Bivins and much of the rest of the Chronicle.

As others have noted, the second part of the headline: "loses biggest tenant" was NOT news.

  10. Good news about the groundbreaking.

Does anyone know what the four towers will hold?  They look like residential towers, and the office/hotel markets seem to soft right now.

It's hard to predict just based on overall market statistics. Look at downtown Dallas for example. They have a much higher office vacancy rate, and I believe a lower hotel occupancy rate than downtown Houston, and yet, there are several new hotels under development and at least one, if not several, new office buildings under development.

  11. Considering that you can't find these stores anywhere else except Baybrook, Willowbrook, First Colony, or the Galleria here in Houston - I would consider them upper-end stores.

There is a difference between upper-end & boutique.

There's also a difference between upper-end, boutique, and designer stores. The Galleria has many true designer stores, eg., Armani, Ralph Lauren, etc., etc., etc., while Memorial City has none. Having said that, I will agree with you that Memorial City may be slightly more upscale than the average suburban mall (at least in Houston). But only slightly more so.
