  1. Here to do the Chron reporter's job: It is apparently in the 4100 block of Loretto. (There does not seem to be a 2100 block of Loretto in the City of Houston.) Assuming the reporter had the name of the street and adjacency to The Menil correct, the Menil must be somehow involved in this (either as landlord or joint venturer), as they own all of the land on both sides of Loretto St.
  2. The problem is that you are employing a false premise. i have it on good authority that there are productive conversations ongoing between the City and TxDOT and a lot of confidence that it will be worked out.
  3. Yeah, so far, those screens are pretty disappointing (and that's being generous).
  4. So when you said it was $25 for 3 mini tacos . . . that was just a lie. Thanks for confirming.
  5. Why do people come on forums such as this and flat out make up stuff, especially stuff that is so easily disproven?? I think we can mark staresatmaps down as "untrustworthy". (Perhaps he should spend more time staring at menus... ;-)
  6. They may have just made the judgment that there are many better ways to spend $30 Million, especially as long as we still have many blocks of surface lots that can be developed.
  7. I've taken this intersection very often and never had the least bit of trouble with it. Lots of cities have similar intersections; most rather celebrate such intersections with names such as "5 points".
  8. Except of course the substation long predates any of those things. Probably even predates the freeway.
  9. We have about 8,500 rooms in the CBD. I think we're pretty much at parity with comparable cities now.
  10. They got their building permits in March of this year...
  11. Just as a point of reference, 3 or so years ago, Oklahoma City wanted a substation on the edge of their downtown to be moved to make way for parking for a new convention center. It cost them $30 Million to pay for the move, plus buying the land on which to move the substation (about 1/2 mile away). (They didn't move it into a building, just to a more remote place... in Houston, anything that nearby would carry with it the distinct possibility of having to be moved again in 20 years or less.)
  12. Or encased in buildings? I wonder if it Is possible for them to be encased within larger buildings, or would they be required to be in their own free-standing building?
  13. Serious question: Where do they put their substations in downtown Chicago and Manhattan? They have to have them somewhere.
  14. We only had 4 hotels downtown for quite some time, for most of the 1990s and until about 2000. Pre-2000: Hyatt Regency, Doubletree-Allen Center (now C. Baldwin), Four Seasons and Lancaster Hotel. 2000: Crowne Plaza (now The Whitehall) and Holiday Inn Express (approx - can't find an exact opening date) 2002: Sam Houston Hotel 2003: Magnolia Hotel, Marriott Courtyard, Residence Inn, Hilton Americas 2004: Club Quarters, Hotel Icon, and Inn at the Ballpark (now Westin) 2011: Embassy Suites 2014: JW Marriott 2015: Holiday Inn and Springhill Suites 2016: Hampton Inn, Homewood Suites, Aloft Hotel and Marriott Marquis 2017: Le Meridien and Hotel Alessandra (currently closed, soon to reopen as TBD) 2019: AC Hotel and Cambria 2021: Hyatt Place
  15. I completely agree with that, and I think the same balance applies to the section running behind the GRB.
  16. That's the danger of relying on the Chronicle... From looking at the Metro board presentations and listening to their meetings, I get no indication that they plan to move those segments ahead of the others or on any different schedule. They talk of leveraging the work previously done on those segments to accelerate the schedule in order to position the entire project for federal funding sooner rather than later.
  17. Zero negative impacts? Hardly. Properties are being taken, streets are being closed. Mexican consulate moved out. Not to mention the negative impacts that come with the years-long construction process... To be clear, I'm not suggesting the negatives outweighs the positives. Far from it.
  18. It's pretty safe to say that Marriott actually owns zero hotels downtown. And by my count, 11 of the 26 downtown hotels fly Marriott flags. IF they add this one and if the W ever gets off the ground, they would be up to 13 of 28. Side point: holy cow! 26 hotels in downtown Houston (and soon to be 27, maybe 28). It seems like not that long ago there were 4 hotels in downtown Houston. FOUR!
  19. It is not being bought by Marriott. It's being bought by Host Hotels & Resorts, so the possible brands are even more numerous. (Host Hotels started its life as part of Marriott, but has been completely separate corporation for a long time and owns many hotels with non-Marriott flags.)
  20. In addition to the problems you mentioned, it also does not distinguish between the Katy Freeway portion and the Baytown/East Freeway portion (let alone between the expanded part of the Katy Freeway, west of the Loop, and the unexpanded portion, inside the Loop). So, no, not worth looking at, but thanks for posting the info.
