Hadn't really thought about it before, but there really is a lot to photograph in that one little stretch of shops and restaurants. The old Heights movie theater, the Carter & Cooley Deli (great sandwiches, and historic Heights photos hanging inside), Harold's in the Heights, Shade, Cricket's Creamery, the junkyard-ish lot... and then all the antique stores, boutiques, and art galleries. I miss working just a few blocks from where you took these nice pics. The long time residents and small mom/pop business are a rarity in this big city. cottonmather0 Posted November 17, 2007 Share Posted November 17, 2007 I love the "downtown" heights (as we call it), though I wish something could be done to make it less complicated to have a glass of wine with dinner without having to make it so easy so as introduce a club and bar scene at the same time. The earlier photos are of Woodland Heights - home to Bayland, Euclid, Woodland and a host of other streets much revered for their arching, live oak bows. The commercial bits are along Studewood which separates central Houston Heights (which consists of Houston Heights, primarily, Stude, and a bunch of other subdivs which share less restricted development than Woodland Heights and Norhill to its north). The latter photos are of central Heights. As far as transitional status - well, hmmm, - the Heights is ever-changing. We moved here in May, 2005 (we live in the western Heights where we do alot of lasso dancing is done ), and there have been nearly 30 new housing units developed within two blocks of our house since then. That's pretty transitional! We've had some crime, but the Tricons being built on the next block are tromping what was effectively a halfway house from Huntsville that rendered our neighborhood's leading break-in suspect. What is great about the Heights is the sense of the place. Today, I conversed with 3 neighbors while doing my morning yard work, had a two-hour lunch with a friend at Berryhill, conversed with neighbors for 45 minutes upon my return, and I am posting from my back porch amongst the crickets and the last hoots of the doves. (Okay. There a few barking dogs and a crazy rooster, too). The streets aren't always neatly curbed. There are some really interesting domiciles ('nuff said) I grew up in a small town in northeastern Ohio. I feel like I've returned home when I walk around the Heights or just sit on my porch (thus my call sign, BTW). Also, Mrs. Porchman have the added benefit of being no more than 10 minutes away (often closer) from great culture - food and art . The neighborhood is very pedestrian friendly, so you're bound to run into friendly folks while walking the dog, riding the bike, or enjoying a pint under the live oaks at one of the many watering holes in the area. For those who haven't been to the Heights in a while, I suggest a Sunday drive. Its funny too, because everyone knows how hard it is to get an Inner Looper to go outside of 610. Hurricane Ike casualty? As I've crossed over 45 I am entering Woodland Heights, a neighborhood established over a century ago. Lots of back streets covered in trees and greenery around here. And some say there's nothing in this city but concrete. I sat in this park for a little while to rest. Time to hit the road again. Houston is flat, but there is actually a semblance of rolling terrain here along White Oak Bayou. By this city's standards these are hills! If there actually were a lot of hills though, I probably wouldn't have made it walking this far. I wish they hadn't concreted this bayou. See? A hill! Taylor St. bridge. There are a lot of great cities in the world, but Houston has to be the only one where I could show you a sign like this with a club/rock concert venue right next to two peaceful-looking houses. They're damned serious about preservation though. Good on them. Interesting this is called the Montrose Skate Shop when I'm a couple miles north of Montrose, in Houston Heights. Turning right from White Oak Drive onto Heights Boulevard, and drawing closer to the destination for the evening. Between the evening sun and all the trees, getting clear shots was a little tricky. jfre81 Posted June 27, 2009 Share Posted June 27, 2009 (edited) This whole little promenade runs down Heights Boulevard. Houston Heights used to be its own town, but was annexed by Houston in 1919. This is its own downtown of sorts. Before there was Cinemark... Time to head back. The Heights used to be a streetcar suburb - that is, people rode a streetcar from the center of Houston into the Heights, which for most intents and purposes is considered part of the inner city now. Instead of streetcars we've got buses now. Riding back downtown, about 8 pm. And they say nobody walks around downtown after work lets out. Heading home now. Until next time...
