They were up in the top five a couple of years ago. Its really a nice little jewel, and I especially enjoy the mineral collection. I could look at them all day. I think the "top 5" ranking may have been achieved by counting the Smithsonian institutions as one.
BeerNut
Wow this looks amazing! I work in O&G so I get to see this out in the field but I always enjoy well done interactive exhibits.

BEES?!
HMNS has a neat exhibit right now- Treasures in Gold and Jade. It is super cool and I highly recommend checking it out- it’s free with admission and is a cool little exhibit. We went the other day, but didn’t check out the Egypt hall that was just finished- anyone get a chance to have a look? We may give it a go next time we’re there
Houston19514
The King Ramses exhibit is extraordinary. Houston is one of only three cities in the US getting this exhibit.

I saw quite a lot of people there when we went who were talking about getting tickets to it (and the museum was pretty chill that day, too. It was early on Monday and there were no crowds.) so it sounds like it’s been pretty popular!

Brooklyn173
I heard that the HMNS butterfly exhibit will be closed for a few month the end of this year. The heavy equipment is already starting to show up. The old glass panes will be replaced with new glass. Also some minor interior reconfiguration but, as far as anyone has said, nothing major.
BEES?!
Love the butterfly exhibit! (but also so does like half of Houston, going by how freaking packed it was during our last visit)

Brooklyn173
"Just like a butterfly in its chrysalis, the Cockrell Butterfly Center is having a transformation of its own. Starting September 12, the center will undergo some exciting changes to make your future visits with the butterflies not only better, but more accessible for all! Before the transformation begins, Members will have exclusive access to the Cockrell Butterfly Center on the mornings of September 9, 10, and 11 from 9-11am. Beat the heat and the crowds, and remember- it’s not a “goodbye”, but rather a “see you later”. Make sure to keep an eye (or antennae) out for future announcements about the center’s reopening and events in early 2023." Besides of widening the walkways to meet code, I haven't heard of any other changes (besides the new glass). But I'm used to not knowing everything.

Brooklyn173
Now that the Butterfly Conservancy is done, I've heard that HMNS is planning a redo of the bug insect portion of the Cockrell Center. I don't know how much or how different it'll be, but I think they are looking at 2024 for construction.
