albertnurick
Near the train tracks; anyone remember this place? (I'm not 100% sure about the name; it could have just been "Mel's". My parents referred to the place as "Mel & Bunny's"; I think Bunny was Mel's partner or perhaps his cook. Mel's Bar B-Q At 4113 Willowbend Blvd. Edit:
nm5k
Sure, ate there a few times. I think the place burned down once, and they mighthave reopened, but then later closed up.. Or.. they burned up and never reopened..I forgot what exactly happened. I remember the lot that it was on then became a nursery if I remember right. I remember they used to have a lot of "old west" type artifacts on the walls, etc.I think this was the lot the place was on..http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&...002264&z=
devonhart
Near the train tracks; anyone remember this place? If the South Main Drive-in Theatre was just on the other side of the tracks, I remember it. Never ate there, but I would smell the smokey auroma from it when I snuck into the back gate of the South Main.

Native Son
Mel had the best bbq beans I have ever eaten! he use to chop up th fat side of the briskets and throw the meat in the beans for the best artery clogging time you could get as a side dish
fortbendtomontrose
That area has always been a bit strange but it's like a ghost town now. The BBQ I don't remember. We liked Matt Garner's on W Gray for links and the Lockwood Inn for ribs.
albertnurick
nm5k: Yep, that's the place. I remember all the kitchy stuff on the walls, and the link looks like the right spot. Now that you mention it, I remember my parents saying something about a fire.Bunny Meyer. Yes, that was him. Weird how you instantly remember things you've not heard for 25 years. marmer
I remember seeing the vacant slab and the Mel's BBQ sign when I would visit friends in the neighborhood in the early 80s. Story was that it had burned down.
