Were some things historically cheaper in NO?

Recommended Posts

When I went to school in New Orleans in the early 70s, at least two things were historically less expensive than in Texas or elsewhere. One was streetcar or bus fare. The other was the price of a Coke.

I cannot recall the price of bottled Coke but I know the streetcar/bus fare was 10-15 cents per ride. [Aside: I just realized my keyboad no longer has the cents symbol on it!]

NOPSI operated the transit system and kept fares low. I think the fare went up to 25 cents within a year I was there, concurrent with making streetcars a one-man instead of two-man operation.

I'm not sure why a bottle of Coke was cheaper? Lower price of sugar maybe?

Way back, the cost of some things in La. were mandated to be lower. Train fares (especially for LSU students going to football games) were kept low by the Huey Long administration. Were utilities?
