Boris
Went to Houston Baptist University today to visit the Lee and Grant exhibit. http://www.hbu.edu/hbu/About_HBU.asp?SnID=141925366 http://www.hbu.edu/hbu/MOSH_Lee_Grant_Exhibit.asp To be honest, I was not aware that this campus even existed until I looked up where the exhibit was located. I'm not from here originally. They would not let me take any photos of the exhibit. Pissed me off because this was the reason why I took my camera. So, afterwards I walked around this small campus and took some photos of the buildings. (the campus is located in the middle of the triangle created by the intersections of Beechnut, Fondren and I-59) Here they are: http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3197.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3196.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3195.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3194.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3193.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3192.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3191.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3189.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3188.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3186.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3185.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3184.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3183.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3182.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3181.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3179.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3180.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3178.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3177.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/issaaa/Houston Baptist University 7-09/IMG_3176.jpg Adios
editor
Nice campus, and great pictures. I'm aware of HBU from its business school (I think), but I've never been there, so thanks for the pictures.

MaxConcrete
Years ago there was a report that HBU was going to build some kind of basketball arena on this property. But I don't know what is currently planned. At this point it is not clear if only the front part of the shopping center is being demolished, or if they will continue to demolish everything. The contractor, U.S. Builders, is mainly a construction firm so that suggests that something is going to be built and this is not just a tear-down. Until recently the demolished building housed a Libreria Christiana. Once upon a time (1980s into 1990s), the main structure of this shopping center housed a Mervyn's. Recently there was a Fallas Paredes in the main building. Photos taken today.
IronTiger
A while back there was a plan posted of HBU's future campus with this center and outparcels gone (I think the Burger King was to be spared). Seems they're moving forward with that plan.

BigFootsSocks
The plan as of a year ago when I was there, was that this was going to be demolished initially for parking. Although, with their 10-year 10,000 student plan, they might be getting ready for a new student housing tower, depending on how successful the plan has been.HBU still owns this land though.

Mab
http://www.propertycommerce.com/flyers/flyer-hbu.pdf With the help of Houston-based retail partner Property Commerce, HBU has since signed retail leases with Salata, FedEx, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Sprint, Jimmy John’s, Shipley’s Donuts, Firehouse Subs, LifeWay, and Minuti Coffee. The Pillars at HBU includes a new entry road connecting the campus to Southwest Freeway, an iconic entry tower, retail, office space, a hotel, enhanced parking, and an arena and event centerhttp://www.hbu.edu/HBU/media/HBU/publications/hbunews/201603-ThePillars.pdf page 13-14 Edited March 3, 2016 by Mab

Urbannizer
http://www.bizjournals.com/houston/morning_call/2016/03/exclusive-houston-university-kicks-off.html Houston Baptist University has demolished some dilapidated retail on the Southwest Freeway to develop The Pillars at HBU, a roughly 30,000-square-foot retail development that'll be complete in 2017. Three building permits approved by the city of Houston indicate the development will cost roughly $3.9 million, but the actual cost could increase, Sandra Mooney, vice president of finance at HBU, told the Houston Business Journal. The retail development will be built on a 30-acre tract of university-owned land that stretches from 7406 Fondren Road to 7731 Southwest Freeway. Phase one of the retail development broke ground in February, and will include two 10,000-square-foot buildings, said Patrick Shelby, the project manager at US Builders. One building has signed Salata, FedEx and Chipotle as tenants. The second building will include a Jimmy John's restaurant. Phase one will wrap up in June. Phase two, which contains one 11,000-square-foot building, will deliver in January. Tenant information wasn't available.

This is beautiful. I think this is exactly what HBU needs - an iconic and timeless statement piece. Certainly collegiate in appearance! Certainly collegiate in appearance! Absolutely, unlike this other "statement" piece that HBU built. Did the architects even build a model, the topper is way too small for the base. Probably looked good in plan!
texas911
Same as this monstrosity in Sugar Land. I doubt it even looked good in plan! And while we're at it, look at this cap. We really need to teach humanities in architecture school. This dome is too perfect but I guess it looked good in elevation drawings! Back in 2013 or 2014, and sadly very likely. McNair's funded the bill for HBU's team and I'd like to think they're just hedging their bets at this point... hindesky
The Jim and Sherry Smith Science, Engineering, and Nursing Building. The necessary fundraising ($50 million) is already underway. It will provide for the renovation and expansion of our current science facilities and will especially build new space for the rapidly growing STEM-related disciplines. https://hc.edu/about-hcu/strategic-plan-2030/
