Houston Christian University OKs $60M budget for new building

Houston Christian University is moving forward on a long-planned building.

The university’s board of trustees approved the $60 million budget for construction of the Sherry and Jim Smith Engineering, Science and Nursing Complex late last month. The building is named in recognition of the Smiths’ lead gift of $20 million to the project, the university’s single largest gift ever.

Construction is expected to begin in January 2025, and the project should be complete in time for the fall 2026 semester, HCU President Robert Sloan said in a press release.

The estimated 71,000-square-foot, three-story building will provide consolidated space for the Linda Dunham School of Nursing’s and the College of Science & Engineering’s laboratories, classrooms, instructional and simulation labs, makerspace/capstone learning environments, and faculty and administrative offices.

HCU plans to release more details and renderings in August.

In addition to the Smith’s 2018 gift, Tadd Tellepsen, CEO of Houston-based construction company Tellepsen, donated $1 million to the project in early 2020.
