Sunstar
I'm not sure how to read this. So does the new GC now have to bid out all the work for the project?

cspwal
They tore up the parking lot a little and put up a fence. Â That counts right?
Houston19514
They had a ceremonial ground breaking. Construction never commenced. They never had a contractor under contract until now.

So does the new GC now have to bid out all the work for the project? If they chose another contractor it either means to was ready put out to bid, or the lowest bidder didn't work out and this is the 2nd lowest bidder Edited September 27, 2015 by BigFootsSocks
toxtethogrady
Whatever it is, timing is right. The Classes of 1971-84 will be gathering this weekend to honor the school.

UtterlyUrban
Fourth Quarter 2015 Start Date, Fall 2018 CompletionI wonder what "Fall 2018 completion" means? Does that mean that it will open for the fall semester (I.e. August)? If not, do they plan to move students half way through the year? Or, do they plan to let the building sit empty until August 2019?I guess that we will find out in a few years.
BigFootsSocks
Yeah I assume that's the case
cspwal
I suspect that means they will finish the last possible day of fall 2018 - 12/20/18 (the day before the solstice)
jackie21love
I cannot imagine it needs 3 years to finish…
j_cuevas713
Saw Singing in the Rain this past weekend at the school. Amazing students, amazing performance... I can't wait for these kids to move downtown. It just seems like the perfect move.

I suspect Urbanizzer (or Urbanizzer's source) mistranslated "3rd quarter" into "fall". Edited October 16, 2015 by Houston19514

UtterlyUrban
Well, "3rd quarter" could still mean "September" (I.e, after the start of the school year). It will be interesting to see what they do..... Will the building finish in "July" so the year starts in August? Or if the building finishes in September will they simply transition in January? I would be surprised if they moved schools mid-way through a semester.

nativehoustonion
On Channel 13 news HISD even though we voted for the bonds. HISD did not anticipate that they need more money, so they don't have the funds to build 14 new schools. I bet this one is on hold.

j_cuevas713
I honestly believe that HISD sees this school as a crown jewel for the district. Didn't they finally find a contractor?
nativehoustonion
I hope so Ted Oberg from Channel 13 gave HISD a F for math. HISD added up the wrong costs for these new schools.

j_cuevas713
Crown jewel? What the hell is this, Trump High School? What? Anyways, no my point is it would be ridiculous to think politics don't play in to this, and if they're going to use any money it will be on this project for sure.

I don't know, seems odd... like this is Xavier's School for Gifted Youngters or something. Are you thinking that because it's located in downtown that it has higher priority over the rest? Are you basing this off of an article?

This school was clearly designed to be noticed. It isn't a typical development for any school. Now while it's no Juilliard, it's def for some of the most talented, most creative young people in the city. So yeah I didn't read it from some article, it's an opinion. I think if any school is going to gain attention for being built, it's this one. It's mean't to stand out.

Well, to play devil's advocate then, couldn't it be possible that because it stands out from all the rest that it may just not fit the budget then? Either way, I hope it gets built. I've just been worried about it ever since they brought up material cost as the reason this hasn't moved forward.

But on the flip side as a development I hope it gets built for the sake of downtown. If Urbannizer is correct, it's a 4th quarter start, so hopefully we see some dirt move soon.
