TheNiche
I thought it was earth, air, fire, and water. Or was it just Earth, Wind, and Fire?I was subjected to a joke about this last week, so it's still fresh in my mind. Attica got it right. They condensed air and water into 'Wind' and added 'Heart'. The show promoted environmentalism, after all. And you can't be a true environmentalist zealot without ignoring historical precedent, casting facts to the Wind, and doing so with Heart so that you don't have to stop to explain yourself. I am so ecstatic to announce that we officially begin rebuilding today! Thank you so much, Houston, for your outpouring of support during this time. Your countless stories and memories of Mai's has helped us navigate beyond the tragedy and move forward. Please continue to share your stories with us as we await the rebirth of a new Mai's. And please continue to visit the website for more updates on our progress. Van Loc is open until 11 on weekdays and midnight on weekends. I'm not sure how late Kim Tai is open, but not quite as late as Van Loc, I think. Jax
I miss Mia's but my favorite Mai's alternative is Thiem Hung in the east end. Only problem is they are only open for dinner on Thursday/Friday.http://www.cafeth.com/index.php
TheNiche
I miss Mia's but my favorite Mai's alternative is Thiem Hung in the east end. Only problem is they are only open for dinner on Thursday/Friday.http://www.cafeth.com/index.phpThiem Hung isn't really suitable for dinner. You can't get anything there simmered in oyster sauce and served in a clay pot.

Jax
Everything at Thiem Hung rocks. I had the chicken curry on Friday and it was amazing. The weekly dinner specials are always awesome.

TheNiche
The website says Mai's is "returning Fall 2010". They can re-build the building, but can they re-build their wait staff? It'll never be the same if the hostess doesn't look at you funny and shrug when you complain that a homeless woman is physically accosting their customers outside their front door. I'll never go back.

Subdude
Don't worry, I'm sure they can find inattentive waitstaff. It's all part of the experience!

Subdude
Anyone know when Mai's is reopening? The website just says "Fall 2010". Is it a new building?
jerrios
A very good replacement for Mai's is Red Pier next to Les Givrals, they have family style meals similar to Mai's. I believe they are an extension of Les Givrals, being owned by the same people, so you won't find very many overlapping items, for instance you won't find pho there. dbigtex56
Swamplot got the update: Opening "early winter". Link to Swamplot post So what's the consensus? i like the stone. Not crazy about another taupe/beige/gray stucco building in Midtown. I feel like I'm drowning in oatmeal.
Subdude
Is it fake styro-stone?It's like they passed some law that every new building must include beige stucco. Without a doubt this is the architectural fad of the decade.

porTENT
It looks like a composite manufactured stone and the stucco is EFIS. Nothing wrong with trying to fit in with Houston as we don't take kindly to architectural stand outs and will punish accordingly.
dbigtex56
It looks like a composite manufactured stone and the stucco is EFIS. EIFS stands for Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems. The product is also called synthetic stuccoLink

brian0123
Mai's held their grand reopening over the weekend and I covered the event here: http://innerlooped.com/745/mais-grand-re-opening-with-a-dragon-dance/ There was an awesome dragon dance as part of the opening! The inside of the place is very nice now... but prices still seemed good.
