20thStDad
Kroger just doesn't cut it most of the time. We buy shrimp from Fiesta often, but when looking for other things I'm hoping there's a place that specializes in seafood somewhere nearby. kylejack
If you're willing to stray beyond the Heights, I like Airline Seafood on Richmond. Very cheap and fresh stuff. Selection could be better.
sonic0boom
Airline Seafood is great (especially when i lived around the corner), and i know that a number of cooks (the restaurant kind) shop there. As to Heights-area places, I believe there are some on Airline in the vicinity of Canino's. Hopefully someone can confirm...
ToolMan
I believe Tampico on Airline sells fresh fish. I know you can pick out your fish while dining in.

samiamj
Chinatown always has the freshest and cheapest variety of seafood. However, due to the distance, I just go down I-10 to Blalock and get my seafood at Ranch 99.
20thStDad
Tampico didn't have jack when we tried it one time. It is much more a restaurant than what I'm thinking of. Sounds like Airline is worth checking out...too bad it isn't on Airline. Edited April 19, 2010 by 20thStDad
rsb320
I always go to the Big Fiesta near Reliant or J&J Mkt at Stella and the Loop. Certainly not the Heights, though. Great to hear that Airline on Richmond is within a mile of me! I've never heard of it, but will be checking that out really soon. Heightsfamily
Airline Seafood is the place! If they do not have something, it probably should not be eaten at that time. My understanding is that many restaurants buy their seafood from Airline including award-winning Reef. Jessica N
Louisiana Foods, a very large wholesaler of seafood in Houston has a retail store at their warehouse on 12th street, near 610. I have never been there, so I can't vouch for it. http://www.louisianafoods.com/contact.htm
woodlandheightskat
Louisiana Foods doesn't allow the average Joe to walk in and buy....you have to have an account/wholesale. It's where Reef gets their fish...not Airline.

Sadly, the Heights farmers markets are pretty small.
Heightsfamily
Looks like Reef gets its seafood both places, which really makes sense:"Caswell gets most of his fish from local independent purveyors, including Airline Seafood, Louisiana Foods and P. J. Stoops, a vendor that sells shrimp from the back of a truck like the ones Caswell remembers from his childhood. " (from CNN Money.com)I think I originally read about their buying from Airline in the Ultimate Food Lover's Guide to Houston put out by My Table. If you haven't seen this, it is great reading about Houston's restaurants. It lives in my husband's car just in case we want to look up something on the fly.Of course, Airline Seafood isn't in the Heights but it does have a retail and wholesale side. We were fortunate enough to set up an account through our biz. Good luck!
