Houston19514
Not so sure it's really that much of a stretch. If the inside is largely gutted, it seems they are starting at about the place the Marriott Marquis is currently. And the Marriott Marquis is scheduled to open in November.
towerjunkie
Could it be possible that they're trying to finish let's say about half the building before SB, stop while the SB is going on, and then finish another half after? Is stuff like that done?
HoustonIsHome
The was a hose running from the building out to the curb on the Travis side. Water was coming from it. Looks like they were draining something

HNathoo
Wow, I could imagine the Exxon building looking like the building on the left as a residential project.

I don't expect much change to the exterior given the timeline. New windows, Sheraton branding and maybe a power wash.

Don't you touch her. She's a gem. We may never see something like that again and it's original. Ignore the historic aspect and think about diversity. If you don't like it at least appreciate how it helps add to the good ones.

Subdude
Somehow I don't quite believe it. If the old Holiday Inn really were about to be renovated into a Sheraton or whatever, it seems that it would be a lot more widely known. The activity the article references could just as easily be just minimal upkeep.
Popular Post AREJAY
http://www.chron.com/news/houston-texas/houston/article/Abandoned-Downtown-Houston-hotel-makes-another-9136654.php Quote The long-delayed renovation of a vacant downtown hotel is cranking up again. A representative of the owner of the downtrodden property at 801 St. Joseph Parkway told the Houston Chronicle on Thursday that work is being ramped up in the hope of the 30-story eyesore becoming a hotel again within the next two years, or perhaps sooner. "We are in the process of rehabbing the building," said Nadeem Nasir with SFK Developmenty, which owns the building. "We are currently in the design stages, waiting to get on the same page as a hotel franchise." Quote “There will be a total strip down with brand new features added,” he said. “It will have a new face.” When asked why they didn’t just tear down the existing structure, which has been an eyesore to commuters on nearby I-45 and visitors to downtown, Nasir said that they decided to renovate because of the cost, stating that a full tear-down and brand new construction would be at least $25 million.
terra002
They just need to tear this down and rebuild.

Dig a hole..... a 3 acre hole 10 feet deep. let rain water or groundwater fill it up. come back in a few years. there is a good chance that there may be fish in it. I'm betting its birds popping out eggs too. Life is, indeed, tenacious,.

HoustonIsHome
The gates on 3 sides were open today. The air coming from the opening on the west side smelled like air trapped in a tomb for 1000 years. The side facing the south is covered in Human excrement. Giant rats roam the outside of the property. The stench around the building is unbelievable. Even the surface parking reads of homelessness even though there might not be one homeless person in site. I am usually with my pom poms in the air when it comes to preservation, but this one they can blow up and I would not bat an eyelash.
Nate99
Driving down Jefferson one afternoon, I had the misfortune to look to my right just as I passed the abandoned bank drive through to visually confirm that the place is indeed a bum latrine. Houston19514
Most of the windows and curtain wall appear to have been removed (at least that's what it looked like from the Metro rail train yesterday). It's become very see-through. Very exciting to see SOMEthing happening with this building. EDIT: I had forgotten about this misbegotten post. I was obviously tricked by an optical illusion. My apologies for what turned out to have been an incorrect report. Edited January 23, 2017 by Houston19514
