IronTiger
Complete streets do necessarily have parallel parking actually Wrong. Complete streets do not have parallel parking necessarily, they just have to accommodate pedestrians, cars, and bikes. Even a Google search of "complete streets" often lack parallel parking in most cases.
Slick Vik
Wrong. Complete streets do not have parallel parking necessarily, they just have to accommodate pedestrians, cars, and bikes. Even a Google search of "complete streets" often lack parallel parking in most cases. We live in Houston, and according to the city they will have parallel parking on at least one side. mfastx
They should make it illegal to ever do extensive repairs on Richmond so as not to disturb the endangered and fragile businesses and residents in the area that would not survive any kind of construction process. Ha! Nice one..

The Pragmatist
The streets are pretty bad, but apparently not bad enough to get people to slow down over said potholes. Heck, I won't drive in the right-hand lane on either side of Westheimer in the area around Lamar High School due to the agglomeration of 6-inch to foot-deep potholes that just keep multiplying over there.
nativehoustonion
The construction on Westheimer is from Shepard to Buffalo Speedway with new paved lanes, underground power lines , wider sidewalks and lots of trees. Just like they did Kirby. At least something is getting done.

trymahjong
It's great that there are repairs getting done on parts of Westheimer. I urge everyone to show up at March 5 CIP meeting so perhaps--just perhaps repairs can be done to lower Westheimer.
kylejack
We live in Houston, and according to the city they will have parallel parking on at least one side. The new Complete Streets policy of the City doesn't have any firm rules, actually. It is just a policy of considering all road users when building or renovating roads. Texasota
There is an executive order instructing the Planning Department to design and implement a Complete Streets policy. That has not been done yet, so what Houston's does or does not entail is not currently known.

Since they intend to apply Complete Streets thinking to all new street construction and renovation, we can be reasonably certain that there will not be street parking on every single street. Houston19514
So ... Slick Vic's claims that the City of Houston requires parallel parking on all complete streets were... made up? False? Imaginary?
IronTiger
So ... Slick Vic's claims that the City of Houston requires parallel parking on all complete streets were... made up? False? Imaginary? I don't think he made them up. He just misinterpreted what was there, just like the article cited in a different thread where he mistook the "lanes for potential rail" as "they took railroad out of Katy Freeway plans". Everyone makes mistakes like that.

trymahjong
Alabama street (from Shepherd to Spur) has been added to the repair "worst first" Richmond gets no repairs till Metro decides if the rail goes through. Westheimer? Yes that was how it was put Westheimer? repairs? That big report the Montrose Management district commissioned on the state of disrepair of Montrose streets was "received" the Peewees but filed away because the content had to be verified or some such remark-- District C hosted a Capitol Improvement Program (CIP) last evening at the multiservice center. Very dry meeting where all the COH (Finance-Public Works-General Services-Public Parks)speakers joined Ellen Cohen in the same ole same ole "prioritize lowing debt and which pot hole is crowned WORST in order to be fixed first. Questions were fielded and answered using and REUSING terms Lowering debt and worse gets fixed first--always finishing each little statement see me after this meeting or call 311-- The magic Van was never mentioned. At the end of the meeting lots of impassioned pleas for repairs-- some about the state of sidewalks but most concerning streets in Montrose from Shepherd to the Spur--- Edited March 6, 2014 by trymahjong
trymahjong
Saw a presentation from COH at Neartown meeting-- A Community meeting for citizen input was held last week-- another meeting is proposed for February. The "rebuilding" of corridor from Main street to Montrose is funded-- the remainder is pending. Looks like 3 lanes of traffic instead of 4 lanes on Lower Westheimer is a go! trymahjong
Yes Lower Westheimer has its parking issues...... this may be why COH set up a special Parking Designated area( lead by MMD) that includes most of Lower Westheimer-- examination of the issue continues......... j_cuevas713
Wow this is really great news! I really like how Upper Kirby District widened sidewalks along Westheimer. It makes that area feel so much better! So when do improvements begin?
IronTiger
Lower Westheimer is narrow enough. The 4 lanes to 3 lanes set-up is good because the four lane set-up is/was useless in several cases (buses and larger trucks cannot stay in one lane). A turn lane would really help there.
