Triton
Do those building in the background exist? No, they are just put in there. I guess to give the rendering a downtown setting. Not sure why you just wouldn't use the real thing.I just don't think the rendering is 100% accurate. The colors that are being applied don't match the colors in the renderings that we've seen. Unless whatever they are applying isn't the final product...
HoustonBoy
I was really hoping they'd somehow incorporate the "Savoy Houston" sign, but oh well. I don't think the colors are final, but I could obviously be wrong.

Purpledevil
Drove by the HoliSavoy yesterday, on the way to Alvin, and uh-oh, the paint job has come to a crashing halt since Triton's posting. Has all the focus switched to interior work now, leaving the exterior a stark contrast of the original faded Savoy and the new shades of gray? I couldn't imagine why you would start a paint job and not finish, unless they were testing color schemes and how much paint the old girl is going to suck up during the recoat. It looks pretty bad with the fresh paint butted up against the faded red background behind the sign, lol.

Purpledevil
Rainy weather? That's definitely a possibility, but it really hasn't seemed like it has rained enough to have brought the paint work to a complete standstill.

mfastx
Seems like a pretty crude job of removing those ledges that stuck out, but I should probably wait until it's finished before I complain.
democide
Got to take shortcuts when you're over budget, but yeah, let's wait until it's completed.

Nate99
Any time I see a big 10+ story slabof brick wall like that I think that someone creative (not me) could paint something intersting on it. For some reason, giant advertisements on such buildings (in other cities, not here for some reason) don't offend me.
Avossos
2014-07-19 13.21.47 by marclongoria, on Flickr The white looks fresh. I think it would have looked nice if the whole window face area was painted white.
UtterlyUrban
I thought that that the grey ends of this building were to be green. Has that changed or is the grey just a primer/base coat?

democide
That's great news! And with all the color experimenting going on (no wonder they're over budget, now pushed back to finish 1Q 2015), I wish they tried coloring it green, I mean it is Holiday Inn. HoustonIsHome
That's not great news, that's sad news. I like that sign. Wish they could have incorporated it into the new name Edited August 29, 2014 by HoustonIsHome
Houston19514
They took down the Savoy sign today. No more Savoy. I passed by late last night and the Savoy sign was still up on the south side of the building. I was hoping they would incorporate that into the name of the new hotel and keep/refurbish the signs. IronTiger
Holiday Inn abandons their Houston downtown hotel two and a half decades ago and returns to the area with a new hotel two blocks down. Classy. Edited August 29, 2014 by IronTiger

Purdueenginerd
Thats awesome. You can see how the sign protected the paint behind it from UV bleaching. Guess it used to be a bright red.

Yes, it was quite red - fitting with the Rat Pack vibe it had back in the day.
Subdude
That's pretty cool. I never realized how red it was. The old Sheraton-Lincoln had similar outlines from its neon signs, but not so vibrant.
