Disastro
To answer the question: Mostly classic rock and alternative bands. I am very faithful to my bands...I don't care if they are considered "old" today or not...I can only stand to listen recent alt rock bands...everything else is lacking. memebag
I see where you're going, but the operative phrase in my statement was "cooler than they actually are." The Beatles, Zepp -- hell, even Lynyrd Skynyrd -- were cool without trying. Their misspelled names were just part and parcel of who they were, not a precocious attempt at feigning coolness without any substance to back it up.It's hard to argue that when The Beatles picked their name they were any "cooler" than a band like 'N Sync. They were both heavily hyped boy bands with misspelled names. The biggest difference was that McCartney and Lennon wrote their own songs, but early work like "Love Me Do" was no more "artistic" or "substantial" than "Bye Bye Bye". TheNiche
I actually like live recordings, but just the thought is a little funny. Some bands do consistently terrific live performances, some performances have more depth or realness to the sound (for instance, contrast Simon & Garfunkel's 'Sound of Silence' live against the studio version), and some performances incorporate new material into a song (Jimi Hendrix does this on several live recordings) or even totally change the song (Tool's 'Third Eye' on Aenima vs. the live recording on Salival). So no, I don't think that it is at all weird to like listening to live material. ...having said that, you don't typically see very much live material that makes it to a CD that isn't at least justifiably decent. Many acts are OK in the studio but terrible on stage.
Gary
Many acts are OK in the studio but terrible on stage.Ain't that the truth. It surprizes me how little the listening public understands the role of a producer in writing and arangement. Much of what you hear on decent studio albums is because of a good producer. They can make a crappy band sound great , thus the reason many sound uninspiring on stage, especially today. Most of these bands today should thanks the gods of Pro Tools (NLE editing). flipper
You're such a kidder...[fist nudges sheeats' chin]But one thing I wanted to share before this thread dies for another couple of years. I "went" to the John Mayer concert on Saturday. There's a nice sized park just west of the Pavilions and I just chilled and listened to the concert there. Lots of people did, actually. Some speakers towards the stage actually point somewhat out of the place and right into the park. The only thing missing was the visual. It was a good concert. You can also hear it bouncing off the walls at Market Street. Just a little something for the cheepies (although we did try to buy last minute tickets but it sold out You can listen to that concert for free again here: http://www.archive.org/download/johnmayer2....flac16_vbr.m3u flipper

Vertigo58
Somewhere over the years the term New Age seemed to evolve into light jazz fusion or something like that? Was very soothing to listen to. There was a great station in LA called The Wave in mid 80's, very ahead of its time. Miss that. The Hyatt downtown used to offer free light jazz shows on Fridays? I still have the posters they used to hand out. K-Light Cafe was a regular radio program in this era.

KimberlySayWhat
Now I'm all nostalgic for the '90s. I wonder when that decade will make its comeback. It's been all '80s for the past several years now. Shouldn't it be winding down? Subdude
80's never winds down!! It goes on and on!!! Hmmm, odd coincidence. A friend and I have this long-running game of trying to infect the other with obnoxious earworms (you know, the awful songs that get stuck in your head for days) mainly from the 1980s. Anyway, she was just pushing this one last week. Now it will be burned into my brain!

KimberlySayWhat
Yeah, Debbie Gibson is way cooler than Tiffany. Tiffany does stupid hand gestures when she sings. I've brought this up before on here; I wonder why so many '80s and early '90s singers clinch their fists when they sing.
