TheGreenMeanie
This may not be as old as some of the other buildings/businesses, but I'm still curious. STØR Furnishings International Inc. was an American furniture chain based in City of Industry, CA, that opened in 1987. It sold European-style furniture and ready-to-assemble furnishings. IKEA filed a lawsuit against the company shortly after opening, claiming copyright infringement, and was settled in 1988 with STØR being forced to change the layout of their stores and advertising. STØR was acquired by IKEA in 1992. The Houston STØR location was a franchised location. When the brand was purchased by IKEA, this store continued operating under the same franchise agreement, becoming one of only a few independently franchised IKEA locations in the world. Does anyone have any memories or photos of it? Where was it located?
Tumbleweed_Tx
it was located where Ikea is now, and inside, it looked the same as Ikea.
TheGreenMeanie
I thought so, but wasn't 100% sure. When did it get changed over to IKEA? I can remember around 94-95-ish first becoming aware of IKEA entirely.
IronTiger
Nothing remains of it today--the building was razed and rebuilt in 2005.
technoevil
It was where the current Ikea's parking lot currently is.
TheGreenMeanie
Okay, now that the location has been verified, when did it change over?
IronTiger
Do you have a Houston library card? (It's free for everyone who lives in Texas) You might be able to find something in the online Houston Chronicle archives. I'd like to, but I don't have the time right now... TheGreenMeanie
Thanks for that info, tiger. Apparently my searching didn't go as far as yours did. I also found out that I have a co-worker that actually worked there, so I'm going to pick their brain a bit about it.
