Texas A&M's building at Helix Park will not be moving forward. The money is being reallocated in the new capital plan to improvements in the Alkek Building and at Innovation Plaza. The project is now called "Alkek IBT Building Lab Expansion/Renovation & EnMed Build-out".

One of the notes says "$69,897,111 was authorized by the Legislature for Texas A&M University TMC3 Biomedical Research Bldg. The project was originally planned to be located at TMC3 in Houston. As provided for in the legislation, the new project will be located just outside the Houston medical center in buildings currently owned by TAMUS, the Albert B. Alkek IBT Building and EnMed Building. The renovations and expansion project will provide the needed space and address the original purpose of the CCAP authorization. The CCAP project will not move forward until Legislative requirements are met, POR is complete and funding is finalized."

I wonder if this is solely due to Medistar's failure to purchase the Alkek building, as originally planned (the programs from the Alkek building were going to move to the Helix Park building), or an apparent different industry-focused direction at TMC Helix Park (originally UTHealth and MD Anderson were supposed to have buildings actually in Helix Park rather than adjacent to it I believe).

After hearing the news about Austin's major setbacks this week, I'm glad to see that Houston is taking a slower pace at growth and not putting the cart before the horse. Steady wins the race. Oracle has decided to move to Nashville, stating that Austin is not a good town for startups due to lack of funding, cost of living and the fact that Austin, isn't what people thought it would be. Tesla to lay off 2,500 workers, thanks to Elons ability to ruin things with his poor judgement. He might be a genius but he talks too much and a lot of things he says rubs a lot of people the wrong way. Several of the new office towers coming online have no one to fill them to go along with an empty Google building and the stories concerning the fact that many of the tech companies are going back to Silicon Valley, Houston and other places, doesn't bode well for the new tallest building in Texas.

One of the other reasons Oracle moved to Nashville is to be closer to the healthcare industry. Too bad they didn't consider Houston... With Helix park under construction alongside levitt green the ceo could have given us a chance. I mean we do have the biggest med center in the world.

It was only a matter of time before things started to level off in Austin. They're becoming a much more impactful city overall but it doesn't happen overnight and like all trends, they fade. Houston is a seasoned vet in the state which is why when people from Austin come here, they all say it feels like a big city.

Very curious what those same people think Nashville is going to be.

It's close to the healthcare industry and that is the other reason Oracle is moving there. They are focusing on Healthcare

Potbelly Sandwich Shop at TMC Helix Park? I wish it was something else.  How about a small, trendy, Houston-based restaurant? Hugo Ortega, Evelyn Garcia, or Chris Shepherd?  Does Potbelly even have beer taps or wine?  Looking forward to the next retail tenant!

Dynamic One is one of the better looking buildings in the TMC. Can't get enough of it!

The workers will appreciate Potbelly’s.  Is there residential in Helix Park?  Why do you need beer and wine?

At least it's not expensive. Tbh, I'd much rather have a low-rent space for a legit taquería or pho/banh mi spot than any kind of chain, but if it's going to be a chain, a decent and reasonably priced sandwich ain't a bad place to start.

My guess is because alcoholism is profitable, and alcoholics are easy marks.  In Chicago I would always see people going home from work with a can of beer in a tiny paper bag they bought at the Walgreens in the train station, and thinking to myself, "If you can't wait the 22 minutes it takes to get from your office to your front door, then maybe you should get help."

There was once a proposal for Kirby Ice House to be the anchor tenant for the parking garage. Probably not the best fit either, but booze has been in planning for a while.

The master plan includes a 150 seat Beer Garden as well.

My visit to TMC Helix Park this weekend.  There has been some landscape improvements such as rock-gardens a long the streets.

What's interesting is how green the grass is growing on the first Helix Park.  It's a perfect lawn. The parks in the rear of the development have a hard time growing for some reason. I wish the grass could be green throughout the entire TMC3. Soon I hope!

While most of the buildings are on-hold, it really is amazing they built 3 buildings right off the bat.  Here is two of them, the CB and D1.

D1 now has illuminated lighting!  Can't wait to see it in the dark!

Parking Garage. Even as a garage it really is one of the nicer buildings in the TMC. It's also the first skeleton building in the TMC.

Cancer detection company inks milestone lease at TMC's new Helix Park campus

A life sciences company is upgrading its Houston presence with a milestone lease in the Texas Medical Center’s new campus.

Switzerland-founded Artidis is the first tenant for Chicago-based venture capital firm Portal Innovations, which occupies the entirety of the third floor of the TMC3 Collaborative Building on the TMC Helix Park campus. Artidis is also the first life science company to take up space in the Collaborative Building.

“The moment we saw Helix Park being built, we could imagine being here,” Marija Plodinec, CEO and co-founder of Artidis, said in an exclusive interview with the Houston Business Journal. “The concept of bringing industry, science and clinicians is unique in terms of clinical opportunities. It’s a no-brainer for us.”

Artidis will occupy 2,000 square feet of space at the Collaborative Building. The space will include a showroom for Artidis’ technology, office space and a lab, according to Plodinec. Artidis is scheduled to move in on Sept. 1.

Artidis specializes in cancer detection and helps create personalized treatment plans for patients using nanotechnology to detect a tumor’s physical characteristics and surrounding environment. The company was spun out of Plodinec’s research at the University of Basel.

Meanwhile, the TMC Innovation Building is still adding new tenants, with surgical startup VenoStent moving into a 10,090-square-foot space in April. VenoStent CEO Tim Boire previously told the HBJ that while Helix Park was considered as an option, the costs were too high for VenoStent at the time.

While Plodinec is excited for the growth of Helix Park, she told the HBJ that for Houston to become a player in the life sciences ecosystem, the city needs to attract more established capital for companies to grow as well as larger industry partners.

“The giants need to be here to collaborate with startups. Lonza is around, but they're more like manufacturers," Plodinec said. "You need someone like Roche, AstraZeneca, the big partners."

Anyone else troubled by how the parking garage is so far from the other buildings? I can't think of a building in the med center that isn't either adjacent to a garage or at least connected by skybridge. Dynamic One tenants have to walk 2 blocks outside. The campus is beautiful but not the most practical for Houston heat and rain.
