strickn
Those are the general projections done last year by TX Dept. of State. The US Census Bureau's state by state estimates for July 1, 2015 will be out by the end of next month, with the metro-level estimates coming in March. JasnoDTX
Austin is lower than I thought. I thought at least 2.5 million. I think Dallas proper can catch up to SA and take 2nd place again. Edited November 21, 2015 by JasnoDTX
nativehoustonion
Houston should hit 2.3 million.

Northwestern Harris county if it was a city it has a population of 1.5 million. Houston annexes the business for tax money. But Houston does not have the capability to annex the households not yet. They could do it in chunks. We will see what our next mayor will do.
JasnoDTX
Yes, annexation will grow your population (Dallas does have some area it can still annex to the south btw)But land area isnt the only thing that effects population. Chicago is only 234sqmiles yet its population is large(though Houston could take its place but that's another topic) Dallas' proper density is increasing a lot right now and I think it's going to be very close with SA next census time. Population rankings aren't that important to me though. If Dallas became the 10th largest city in Texas that would be great. Driving would be a breeze. I remember Dallas proper was suppose to have fast growth last decade, but ended up only growing by 0.8 percent (iirc) when the actuals came out.The density increase in Dallas proper is happening but that doesn't mean it is growing faster than SA. It's density just increases faster due to the smaller size.I highly doubt it will pass SA. That city is growing both ways, with room for even more suburban development inside. JoninATX
Austin is lower than I thought. I thought at least 2.5 million.I think Dallas proper can catch up to SA and take 2nd place again. It's getting close to it. The Austin area has surppased the 2 million mark last summer. So the current projection would be about... 2,050,000 or so.

The weird thing I don't get though is why Houston is only the 10th largest media market and DFW is 5th. Anyone know why? Prolly more money there per capita.
