hindesky
With such a short construction schedule I assume it will be a surface lot. Just south of GRB - Block 309. http://i.imgur.com/HoOLQTr.jpg http://i.imgur.com/eEtUs9O.jpg
UtterlyUrban
Wasn't it already a surface parking lot?
tigereye
Maybe a lot for The Rustic? Supposed to go in 1 block up. Probably can take in some Toyota Center parking business too. Edited November 27, 2016 by tigereye

Pitts
It's crazy this wasn't a parking lot already considering it's two blocks from Toyota Center and two blocks from GRB. Just goes to show how much of a dead zone that the southeast corner of downtown still is.

Actually, a lot of those grass fields currently serve as parking lots during Rockets games, concerts, etc. Good it's being surfaced at least.
hindesky
This pic shows 2 mid rise parking garages, 5 paved surface lots and several grassy fields/or old foundations that may be used for area parking for Toyota/GRB events.

cspwal
I feel bad for people who stay at that holiday inn express thinking "oh this will be downtown it will be great" and get here and it's an island in a sea of vacant blocks
j_cuevas713
I wish those lots were lined with nice townhomes
cspwal
I have thought that many times too. I guess whoever owns the land wants enough from it that townhouses wouldn't be worth it

I think most folks know exactly what they are renting and trade the location for the price. A quick search of rates shows that it is about $25 cheaper per night than the new Hampton Inn and $60 per night cheaper than the Embassy Suites. In over 100 hotel stays I have probably used street view twice to scope out the neighborhood. very useful tool, and even having used it before, I rarely use it. Can't really be too hash on people who don't make use of it. I do agree with your second point however. I usually sacrifice location to lower costs. The few times I have used street view, I was trying to maximize amenities while not boosting cost too much.

hindesky
It turned out to be a permeable parking lot.

That's so, so, so, un-Houston I actually like that idea, assuming it doesn't create issues with subsidence, etc.
BeerNut
Could use tax abatements to incentivize them.

Drainage tax is based on the amount of impermeable surface on a property.
Texasota
Surface parking should also be taxed at a higher rate than commercial or residential property.

The law does not allow for different rates based on use. Presumably, a property used for parking is valued higher than an unused property.
Texasota
Right, City Council would have to pass something, but it would provide an incentive for property owners to actually develop their lots. I suppose, alternatively, a ban on paid surface parking, at least in the CBD, would have a similar effect.
hindesky
This parking lot is being remodeled or torn down I can't decide. They tore out the porous plastic and rock but it seems like there is new curbs. Not sure what's going on.
Tumbleweed_Tx
Which lot is supposed to have Camden Phase 2? (Not that I see them building that within the next 10 years)

This parking lot is 2 blocks east of Toyota Center and 2 blocks south of GRB.
j_cuevas713
I really don't mind if all of these empty lots become parking with nice sidewalks. At least it looks like there is some structure on this side of downtown.
