bookey23
Is this a fun and/or well-attended event? I'm potentially interested, but would love some more info!
hindesky
If the weather is nice it gets packed with boaters. Some race the course even though it's not a timed event. Most treat as a casual fun event. I've never done it but have seen them doing it multiple times.

Popular Post EastwoodEnvoy
Houston’s first Hispanic archive center moves forward, renewing advocates’ hopes https://houstonlanding.org/houstons-first-hispanic-archive-center-moves-forward-renewing-advocates-hopes/?utm_source=Sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=2024226_Newsletter_Hey Houston&utm_term=Houston Quote A decade after city officials identified the need for a center dedicated to the Hispanic and Latino community, the Hispanic History Research Center is finally moving forward, with early plans calling for its completion in 2026. A 25,000-square-foot industrial site on the Turkey Bend property along Navigation is currently being retrofitted to house the research center, which will serve to archive historical collections, such as photographs, documents and film, that detail the rich history of Houston’s Hispanic and Latino community. In December, the city signed a memorandum of understanding with the Buffalo Bayou Partnership agreeing to purchase the property at 5803 Navigation Blvd. and pay for some improvements totaling about $10 million, but only once those improvements are completed. 12

Popular Post hindesky
Houston's Tony Marron Park is set to undergo major renovations at the end of this year. But before then, Buffalo Bayou Partnership and Aurora Picture Show are throwing one last big art fest at the east side park. Called Night Light, the festival features several visual artists who have created site-specific light installations that will be projected throughout the park on the evening of April 6. It's a continuation of Houston's long-standing embrace of light and space artists, from James Turrell Skyspace at Rice University to Carlos Cruz-Diez to Jean-Michel Jarre's Rendez-vous Houston, which famously lit up the buildings of Downtown in 1986. For Night Light, BBP’s co-presenter, Aurora Picture Show, has chosen mostly Houston artists, including Violette Bule, Ronald Llewellyn Jones, and duo Nick Vaughan & Jake Margolin, who will create site-specific works to be displayed in the park. This is the second year that the festival will take place at Tony Marron Park and will likely be the last event there until renovations at the park are completed in 2026. https://www.chron.com/culture/arts/article/night-light-festival-houston-18967660.php

bobruss
It would have to go on the north side of the Bayou, because River Oaks, and ROCC are not going to allow pedestrians, runners or cyclist in their backyards. It might be a good place for a highline like in NYC, above Memorial drive. That would be an incredible view of downtown if costs didn't matter.

I am being told: "We are working through contract reviews on this now. Short answer is that we will start design this spring, that will take 12-18 months, then another 12 months of permitting and then construction (another 12-18 months). We are at least three years out. These projects take forever. " 8

hindesky
In a milestone moment for the city’s long-awaited Hispanic History Research Center, more than 200 Houston residents packed into a dilapidated warehouse Saturday in the East End for a community forum to discuss the future of the promised Latino-focused archival library. Hosted by Council Members Mario Castillo, Joaquin Martinez and Julian Ramirez, the self-coined “Three Amigos” and the city’s only Latino council members, the forum was the first opportunity for community input on a project that has been in the works for years but has, until now, made little progress. The planned Houston Public Library facility was first added to the city’s projects listduring former Mayor Sylvester Turner’s administration after voters approved funding in a 2017 bond issue, but library representatives said natural disasters like hurricanes and the pandemic delayed the project. https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/houston/article/hundreds-show-forum-houston-hispanic-research-19398353.php

hindesky
From their email....... Turkey Bend: An East End Cultural Hub Perhaps the most unique site in Buffalo Bayou East, Turkey Bend is a former barge terminal with an expansive waterfront wharf located at the confluence of Buffalo Bayou and Navigation Boulevard in the Greater East End. As of this spring, construction has officially begun on the first phase of this site, a 50,000-square foot warehouse at street level. Contributing to BBP’s vision for this site to be a cultural hub, the Houston Public Library Hispanic History Research Center will be housed here, as well as an open-air plaza with dramatic views of the bayou. A unique art tunnel featuring preserved graffiti will connect the warehouse to the waterfront. Future phases will include the transformation of the historic wharf into a vibrant gathering space for boating, events, and performances. Bridging the Bayou, Connecting to Community One of the most gratifying aspects of working in Buffalo Bayou East is talking with community members who have personal connections to the places BBP is working to improve. Japhet Creek is a historic tributary reaching deep into the Fifth Ward that will become a portal to Buffalo Bayou and beyond. While initial improvements to Japhet Creek Park including native plantings, trails, lighting, and an entry plaza are already underway, the next phase will be truly transformational, with a new trail following along the creek and a bayou-crossing pedestrian bridge linking to the south bank. n March, BBP and project teams held multiple community meetings to ask Japhet Creek neighbors, Fifth Ward residents, and members of the broader Buffalo Bayou East area to provide input on what matters to them. We are so grateful to those who took the time to join in these conversations. Contact us if you are interested in participating in any of our upcoming convenings. Another way to get involved at Japhet Creek and other Buffalo Bayou East projects is to volunteer. As construction on the initial phase of Japhet Creek Park nears completion, it has been blooming with wildflowers and greenery. To ensure the park and nearby tributary continue to thrive, over the past few months we have hosted several volunteer groups to help clear debris, remove invasive species, and establish a beautiful, sustainable, and clean public space. Stay tuned for news on the official opening of Japhet Creek Park in early fall. https://buffalobayou.org/volunteer/ Edited May 28 by hindesky
hindesky
Also in the Buffalo Bayou Partnership email was a link to a short film by artist Ezra Wube. HomeBayou As part of our participation in the High Line Network, BBP brought artist Ezra Wube to Houston to collaborate with Buffalo Bayou East community members on the creation of a new film about their neighborhoods. The Ethiopian-born, New York-based Wube specializes in stop-motion animation and worked with participants to make a visual and auditory map of Buffalo Bayou East using media, materials, personal objects, and words. The resulting film, HomeBayou, is a joyful portrait of a place and culture, capturing the essence of the landscape and the stories of the people. 6
