Ashikaga
That place was called "Billy Outlaws". I worked there as a kid. They did very well. The owner sold out to the manager who mis-managed the place and it folded later. The original owner opened several Mr Gatti's later...but I believe those folded too. I do remember his daughter, Nadine...very attractive. It was sorta of a college hangout in the late 80's. I recall Mary Lou Retton coming over for drinks...and this before she was married. She had to sit on pillow in her Corvette to see over the dash. She had already won her Olympic medals. What was their punch based drink called? They would only allow you 2 instead of their 3 for 1 deals. It was very potent.Talk about an irony. The whole time that we lived in Houston (1962-64) we never went to eat at Uncle John's Pancakes. Back then I liked their catchy-sounding jingle on their TV and radio commercials (Pancakes, pancakes, we're Uncle John's Pancakes, strawberry, blueberry, etc.). When we came to Houston to go to Astroworld for the first time we stopped there and ate breakfast. Someone else on this forum found on Ebay a coffee cup and an ashtray with the Uncle John's Pancakes logo on them.

Ashikaga
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Molina's "Mexico City" on Main St. I've never had mexican food like that since they closed and the "new" location just doesn't seem the same. The Woolworth's downtown location also had good hot dogs & for a quarter, you could have a dog & a malt too. Also, "Ye Olde Cottage Inn", close to Rice Institute (then), with their little "flags" stuck in the baked potatos claiming that, "You may eat my jacket. We have been rubbed, tubbed & scrubbed." I really miss Valian's pizza too & the salads were the best.Yes, I can vaguely remember the soda fountains at downtown places like Woolworth's and Walgreens. I can still see the crushed ice on the wet Coca-Cola glass and those upside-down cone-shaped thick glasses that they put ice cream in for a float. Yes, that with a patty-melt sandwich. nm5k
Used to go to the weinersnitzle near Bissonet and Hillcroft.. Gone now..As far as a few close by.. Westbury Square had a few that are all closed now. You had Village Inn Pizza, Bull n Anchor, Al Betos, Rumpleheimers, and maybe some I forgot about. The buildings for Village Inn and Bull n Anchor still stand. Bull n anchor was in the old run down shell of a building to your right, when you turn into Home Depot from W. Bellfort.Al Betos and Rumpleheimers, which were both near the fountain, were bothtorn down to make room for the Home Depot. I think Al Beto's would be about on the far back corner where they now sell lumber, etc.. :/I once worked at Al Betos's, I was the daytime manager when I wasabout 16 or 17.. Also worked at Bull n Anchor for a while later on..I imagine that the owner of Al Beto's , "Gilbert Villasana<sp>?" is now dead. Ihaven't heard from him in years. Mike Shields used to be the ownerof Bull n Anchor... No tellin what happened to him... The building that heldVillage Inn has been sitting unused for years, but is still there..Dang...I forgot about China Cottage...It was next to B&A, and I thinkit's basic building still stands too... China Cottage was the last of thoseresturants I actually ate at.. I used to do their refrigeration, walk in cooler, etc work until they closed down.. All those places had pretty good grub..MK

The fact that it is now down to two shows that banana splits and sundaes must have lost their appeal. That was really some alliteration in their opening sentence. Ashikaga
The Original One's a Meal was on West Gray, next door to the River Oaks Theater. old_Sharpstown
I don't believe it! You remember things exactly the same way that I do. Yes, that was indeed the tune for Chuck Davis Chevrolet. Is the car lot still there, but under a different name? No, it wasn't any ear infections on your part. I also remember the bass/baritone singing voices for Tommie Vaughn Ford. Yes, it did sound eerie. This was back when I lived in Houston from 1962-64. Tommie Vaughn passed away last year. Thanks for looking up Uncle John's Pancakes. Now I think that I can safely say that it no longer exists (unless someone else on this forum says that he/she passed down O.S.T. and says that they saw it or remains of it).All I could recall of the old Tommie Vaughn jingle is:"..They got great service..they got good price, they got everything (missing words) that's nice......Tommie Vaughn...Tommie Vaughn Ford" All done in a deep baratone/"Texan sounding" voice.Allthough no song comes to mind...I guess everyone recalls the "Rocket City" dealership on the Gulf Freeway near the Gulfgate mall. Was it Dan Boone's dealership? Lastly. was it Frizell (??) that had "A whale of a deal" with a whale cartoon as a logo?
