Oh looks like they finally put steel in the way now. I rode past those barricades just a few weeks ago and it was still fully open. Guess that means avoid this area for the next year or so...

I tried the suggested detour yesterday - MLK to Old Spanish Trail to Lidstone. It is actually not too bad. The sidewalks are wide and empty of pedestrians, at least on the east side of MLK and the north side of OST, almost like a bike trail.

I am kind of sad, I hoped UH might be able to use this land one day, or maybe it could have became a park. Instead we get another useless and unwanted (IMO) freeway from the state government.

It's going to be a great alternative to I45 and 288 if you need to go South to the loop from UH.

It's a short 3 mile freeway that's likely not going to get extended beyond 610 anytime soon, or ever. Even the Hardy Connectors more useful than this. This doesn't begin to cover the houses and properties cleared for this, and the neighborhood that will have to deal with the added noise and pollution after its complete. A better alternative would be investing in actual alternative transportation, like commuter rail. We can only add "just one more lane" so many times.

It's usefulness, like any transit project, depends on where you are going.  As for adding lanes, the Katy Freeway west of 610 is 26 lanes wide, including the feeders, so there's still plenty of lane width that can be added to all the freeways around town.  The Katy should be the standard for the metro area.

the ROW was acquired a long time ago, the neighborhoods have been broken already. so it's kind of in the worst possible place right now, neighborhoods broken, but nothing to show for it.

as adding freeways, or taking over ROW to add more capacity goes, this is pretty well non-invasive for where it's at now.

the extra pollution being added, both noise and particulate will hopefully be mitigated somewhat with some barriers, but we'll see.
