A rendering of Hattie B's coming to the Heights next year. The restaurant is designed by Michael Hsu Office of Architecture.

Hattie B's Hot Chicken restaurant is under construction at 1808 N Shepherd Dr.

The rendering is located on Virgata Property's website.

Any updates? Is the 1808 N Shepherd Dr property for lease again?

A lease listing for 1808 N Shepherd Dr appears on Virgata Properties' website. Also, a listing on Crexi was recently updated. The leasing materials are dated January 5, 2023, at least that's the date shown when downloaded.

It's possible this could be an old lease listing. I don't know.

Is Hattie B's no longer moving forward here?

It looks like the Virgata posting might be for 2808 N Shepherd, the little retail center just off the 610 feeder.

I don't know. The leasing materials are quite clear it's 1808 N Shepherd Dr.

The leasing space also includes Heights Haven, the former event venue at 637 W 18th St.

From the Crexi lease listing for 1808 N Shepherd Dr:

  • Location: 1808 N Shepherd Dr

  • Hard corner N Shepherd Dr. & W 18th St.
  • Total parking spaces: 55

I reached out to Virgata Property regarding 1808 N Shepherd Dr. The listing is new and accurate, according to their response. So, hot chicken restaurant Hattie B's will not go up here.

now the question is where will we get hot chicken on Shepherd?!

Well, there's Daddy's Chicken Shack at 1223 W 11th St (on the corner of N Shepherd Dr). And coming soon is the Crack Shack. That will be located at 1541 N Shepherd Dr, Suite 100 in the Market at Houston Heights development.

Daddy’s Chicken will likely not last since the 11th street bikeway changes.  Management says it’s a dead zone from 4-7 p.m.

Eh I'm skeptical its the bikeway that does them in -- their business looked slow no matter the number of lanes available.

I've never seen more than a couple of people in there, and I drive by pretty frequently.

Looks like Houstonians will have to wait a little longer than expected to try one of the most famous suppliers of Nashville hot chicken. Hattie B’s has canceled its plans to open a location in the Heights, a representative tells CultureMap.

The representative cited “construction costs for the ground-up build and other issues with this particular site” as reasons for the decision not to move forward. An eagle-eyed user on the Houston Architecture Info forum spotted a leasing notice for the property at 1808 N. Shepherd Dr. that had been scheduled for Hattie B’s.

As listed in the architectural barriers project filing, Hawkers will be located at 1801 North Shepherd Dr. The scope of work includes a "tenant fit out of an existing newly constructed shell building space by landlord to a new Hawkers restaurant."

Construction is estimated to begin in November and completed by next spring.

Previously, Hattie B's intended to build a restaurant on the property.

Earlier this week, Orlando Business Journal reported Hawkers Asian Street Food filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

The Florida restaurant chain recently leased the 1808 N Shepherd Dr property in Houston. Plans are to build a new building for the restaurant.

Highlights from the article:

  • Hawkers’ owners were in jeopardy because the loan terms included a pledge on the ownership of the company, Shuker said...

  • The filing gives the company time to renegotiate terms and resolve financial issues while maintaining day-to-day operations...

  • None of the chain’s 15 locations...are expected to close.
