phillip_white
Saw this while in Galveston for a day trip. Looks to be a major catalyst for this side of the island. http://blockcompanies.com/projects/the-oleanders-at-broadway https://cw39.com/news/texas/new-photos-more-affordable-housing-coming-to-galveston-in-2023/
arche_757
I forget the statistic exactly but I think almost ALL of Galveston County’s government subsidized housing is in Galveston, this despite the fact the vast majority of people who reside in the county live on the mainland. League City is by far the largest city within the county (population north of 100K), with Texas City also being a big population center. These two also have greater access to a larger base of jobs than what is solely on Galveston Island, which, aside from the port and UTMB is highly dependent upon tourism.

arche_757
@Houston19514, right. What I meant was “most of the lower income/subsidized/HUD supported housing within the County has been constructed on Galveston Island.”

Looks like they've made significant progress since I was there in May.
hindesky
Arrived in Galveston to volunteer for the SE Island Rideout around 8 am Saturday, rain had just let up and decided to fly my drone to take a few pics.

phillip_white
I drove by this today and it's looking really good. I guess I assumed it would have a budgeted appearance, but there's a lot brickwork in progress that gives it an almost historic feel. It's going to blend in well.
phillip_white
Looks amazing. Glad this is the first thing you see when getting into town (although this was taken on the way off the island).
k5jri radio
As has been stated by other HAIF members, a significant number of the better paying jobs in Galveston County have "moved away" from the City of Galveston to League City and other areas, incorporated or otherwise, in Galveston County. Despite attempts to diversify to more year round jobs, many of the remaining jobs in the City of Galveston are highly seasonal due to their direct or indirect dependence on tourism. In other words, wages + gratuities (tips) might provide a reasonable standard of living, but only for part of the year. Subsidized housing (free or reduced rate) and UTMB free medical care can offset this to some extent. What any particular group of people consider to be a "reasonable standard of living" is highly subjective.

k5jri radio
The exterior appearance of the Oleanders At Broadway is better than I had expected it would be. This residential complex should help to mitigate the ongoing shortage of affordable housing on Galveston Island.
