Daniepwils
In one of my pictures (the rainy ones), you can see where they put up the stage and everything on that parking lot near the Hilton.

Daniepwils
The groundbreaking scared me half to death today....I come back from lunch, and am flossing my teeth in my office and all of a sudden, I hear what seemed to be two rockets, and BOOOM. I jump out of my chair, and look out the window, and see two big clouds of smoke. LOL I just remembered they were having the ceremony today, anyways, just thought I would share that, I am cracking up laughing now. There were only about 30 or 40 people down there for the ceremony today.Anyone know what the name is yet? Trae
"Discovery Green Park." What a dumbass name, at least for the time being. They could have picked something better.
Daniepwils
moo, its an ok name I suppose, in going with the whole "space" theme...Tom Green Park sounds better... Edited October 17, 2006 by Daniepwils
GovernorAggie
I'm a little biased, but I had submitted "Pinnacle Park", and had even submitted all kinds of symbolism with the name. It may have not been the best, but it is certainly better than "Discovery Green".
Highway6
Just plain ol' "Discovery Park" would have been so much nicer. Simple but nice.
Trae
Discovery Green Park sounds better. Just add "park" to the end.

KimberlySayWhat
Eh. I guess they didn't think too favorably of my Katrina's Playground submission.
GovernorAggie
When they announce who submitted the winning entry.. we are So TP'ing his house !!I think it was a "her" that won--a Kim Borja with Pappas Restaurants. It's nothing against her--consultants hired by the Conservancy picked the name, I think. There's just something about Houston and trusting consultants to have all the answers...Plain 'ol "discovery Park" would have been better--I agree. Or, they could have just swapped names with Tranquility Park. Discovery Green just sound too...small...for a 12-acre downtown park. It's not a bad name, but I just think that it would have been better suited for a smaller pocket type park.
MidtownCoog
From Webster's:Green -4 : a grassy plain or plot: as a : a common or park in the center of a town or village b : PUTTING GREEN
ProHouston
"Discovery Green"http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/4265563.htmlKinda gay...Discovery is boring but tolerable... hopefully "Green" doesnt catch on..I like it. This "Green" needs to be a unique place for Houstonians. I don't think "<fill in your choice> Park" would be very exciting. "Discovery Green" is a nod to our fair city's space history as well as a being a traditional term (Green). "<fill in your choice> Park" could be forgotten, glossed over, I don't think Discovery Green will.
KimberlySayWhat
Yeah, it makes me think of a golf course. But oh well. I don't care for it, but we won't think anything of it in a couple of years. Just like the Houston Texans.
N Judah
As soon as they break ground, wander onto the plot with some clubs and golf balls. See if you can get your picture in the paper.
MidtownCoog
GOD forbid "Discovery Green" actually have a space theme.Been there, done that, with Tranquility Park.Of course it has too many features to begin with, but what else should we expect?Forget our space past - what about the space future? KinkaidAlum
Maybe they'll yank the rights from the Cafe Annie folks and give it to Fertitta...Tillman can then salvage the Looping Starship from Astroworld for our new Discovery Green. Wrap it in green neon so we can have both sides of downtown covered.

houstonfella
Discovery GreenI think Discovery Green will be a great park. When they named Hermann Park, did anyone have reservations about that name? Probably. I think the renderings show a beautiful park downtown. We need that more than simply building more skyscrapers (which is inevitable) or more parking garages.
