How long before we hear the Kroger lot will be completely redeveloped?

(shudder!) I'm still reeling over the loss of Disco Kroger. The inconvenience of losing Snooty RO Kroger might be more than I can bear.
The market supposedly corrects itself, but what happens when all of the supermarkets have been torn down to build luxury apartments?
I guess they'll starve. But, at least it will be in luxury.

Allen West?

He is an ultra, far right wing, ex military guy who was accused of torture in the military. Got elected to Congress in Florida then lost his reelection. He moved to Texas and ran for governor in Texas because he thought Abbott was too liberal.

Hard Pass on that name.

I do think a grocery store on Montrose would still have enough catchment to survive - especially as the ground floor of apartments. But it's hardly a food desert, given the Montrose HEB, Midtown Whole Foods, and Waugh Whole Foods nearby.

(And before folks chime in with the "Whole Paycheck" thing, let me just say that I spend about $25 a week on groceries and exclusively shop at the Midtown WF. They have solid bulk, frozen, canned, and dried options at solid prices.)

One thing for sure, if you cant find something in the holiday crush, go to Midtown Whole Foods . Its always free of crowds and the garage is easy to navigate. I went there for Thanksgiving products I couldn't find in other stores or didn't want to deal with the crowds. It was great. Literally many more workers than shoppers. I only hope they get enough customers to justify staying open.

I think it does. It's never a crazy rush, but it seems very steady to me.

I’m assuming they approved the variance and construction will start next month?

It was a consent item at the last Planning Commission meeting but I doubt it's starting that soon. The bank isn't the only tenant so they may have to wait for all the leases to be up. Then comes demo. It's probably going to be a while.

I much prefer the building that's already there to the renderings of the croque monsieur

Interesting! I very much don't. I feel like the current building doesn't really engage the street at all.

Plumbing company told me they were waiting for the city to show up to shut off the water so they could blank off the water pipes. Electrical has been disconnected. Is demo coming next?

Are they really paying to demo this building to build a 2 story spec retail building?

How do those numbers work?

You think something like the taller apartment building would have to be built to make this project feasible

If not, why didn't they just renovate thr existing building for retail?

Such a shame if they are indeed tearing it down.  This is a cool old building of a style you just don't see built anymore.  If it's replaced with something more dense it won't be all bad, but a 2-story retail building does not sound appealing.  Maybe if the new building has interesting architecture, but knowing how Houston is I'm not optimistic.
