Baylor College Of Medicine News & Updates

I'm a researcher at UT Health Sciences, and we're still in the process of recovering from Allison. There's definitely a space crunch right now, but the replacement research facility is coming along and should be ready in a few months. That will help a lot. Otherwise, the med school building is rather, um, dated looking (gotta love the 70s paint and wall decorations!) but is certainly functional. And it is now much better protected in case of flooding. The other issue the med students (and the faculty) are currently all worked up about is the possible closing of the fitness center in the building. Apparently administration attempts to close the thing every 3 years or so, but thus far it's stayed open.

Baylor's new research building (Alkek) is certainly much newer, nicer, and cooler than the med school here, but I don't know where the med school classes are at Baylor. They might be in the older buildings, like Cullen.

I can't tell you a whole lot about the teaching hospital differences, but I think that a degree from Baylor probably has a little more prestige.

However, that certainly isn't everything - you need to find the program you're going to fit in with the best. Also, I take it you haven't applied yet? Why not try for both, then if you get interviews at both schools you will get a much better feel for the strengths and weaknesses of each. (I realize applying to multiple schools gets expensive). You will get the chance to talk to current students and see for yourself what's going on.

And finally, might St. Thomas have a list of alumni currently in med school at Baylor or UTHSC? I'm sure you could get in touch with them and they could help you out.

Random shout out to Baylor St. Lukes for removing my stepfather's cancer.  My family moved to Houston for a few years to take care of the cancer treatment. My mom and her husband finally left Houston with a clean bill-of-health.

Kind of sad to see them go. Knowing they received some of the best health care is always good to hear.  That's why people travel all over the world to seek treatment here.

Kudos team!

The Texas Medical Center hospital systems sure have has some scandals lately.

The FBI and DOJ really caught those Baylor St. Lukes doctors stepping out during critical surgeries.  Who does that?  Sounds like the doctors were cutting corners and should be retiring at that point.  They lost interest.

Successful first-in-human implantation of the BiVACOR Total Artificial Heart by Baylor and THI doctors
Jul 25, 2024

https://www.bcm.edu/news/successful-first-in-human-implantation-of-the-bivacor-total-artificial-heart-by-baylor-and-thi-doctors

The Texas Heart Institute (THI), BiVACOR®, a clinical-stage medical device company, Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center and Baylor College of Medicine announced today the successful first-in-human implantation of the BiVACOR Total Artificial Heart (TAH) as part of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Early Feasibility Study (EFS) on July 9, 2024. BiVACOR’s TAH is a titanium-constructed biventricular rotary blood pump with a single moving part that utilizes a magnetically levitated rotor that pumps the blood and replaces both ventricles of a failing heart.

The first-in-human clinical study aims to evaluate the safety and performance of the BiVACOR TAH as a bridge-to-transplant solution for patients with severe biventricular heart failure or univentricular heart failure in which left ventricular assist device support is not recommended. Following this first implantation completed at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center by Baylor College of Medicine surgeons, four additional patients are to be enrolled in the study.

Received this letter from my urologist the other week. The letter discusses basic science and clinical research goals and accomplishments.

Also notes of the opening of a new Baylor Men's Health Center next year on the 7th floor of 7200 Cambridge.

Mohit Khera is a great doctor.

I had forgotten that BCM's urology department is named after Dr. F. Brantley Scott, and I see that Dr. Khera occupies an endowed chair also named after Scott. Scott's primary claim to fame was having developed the inflatable penile prosthesis, since used in hundreds of thousands of patients to treat ED, and he also developed the artificial urinary sphincter to treat incontinence.

One of Scott's daughters was a classmate of mine in junior high school. I'm fairly certain that few people in our class knew who her father was or what his profession was, as given the usual preoccupations at that age, any mention of matters urological (particularly ED) would have likely resulted in a never-ending series of jokes.

My mom recently married her boyfriend of 5 years.  My (now) stepfather was cancer-free for 5 months. He had a recent cat-scan checkup in New Mexico, where he lives.  The scan showed some type of growth on his lungs.  The imaging was sent to Baylor College of Medicine in Houston for further guidance.

The high-profile surgeon was confident.  Rather than taking a biopsy to figure out what exactly is the growth, she'll just remove it.  A simple lung surgery will fix it.

My friend doesn't deserve this. He just went through hell with multiple cancer removal surgeries and treatments.  The dual radiation and chemotherapy he suffered was brutal.

Mark is flying to Houston tomorrow.  I will definitely treat him to Tex-Mex and gets some good margaritas!  Molinas on Bellaire or Escalantes in Meyerland?
