Longhorn Network to get rebrand amid Texas’ move to SEC

https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/Articles/2024/06/24/longhorn-network-rebrand-texas-move-to-sec?publicationSource=morningbuzz&issue=9030f7053c3e401ab99ccbe3bf7565c5

The Univ. of Texas is set to unveil a new-look version of the Longhorn Network today that will rebrand the school’s in-house television venture as a free streaming platform.

The idea of this version of Longhorn Network, which will launch officially on July 1, percolated amid the process of Texas shifting from the Big 12 to the SEC. LHN was a novel concept at inception in 2011, but the SEC’s television deal with ESPN entailed it be phased out amid the conference change since SEC Network will broadcast the live games while LHN will house original content, live coaches shows and other historic footage and content. Fans will also be able to follow along play-by-play radio audio and live football statcast, among other fixtures.

Endeavor Streaming, which has been used as a back-end technology for streaming efforts by European soccer giants, presented a baseline operating platform in which a new-look LHN could run. Learfield Studios, meanwhile, will help staff the venture with four full-time employees that will work in conjunction with Texas’ in-house creative team to develop branded content for Longhorn fans. Learfield will also handle advertising and sponsorship sales.

“About 40% of people get their content through streaming,” said Texas AD Chris Del Conte. “Having that available and having shoulder programming around all of our games, the ability to show coaches shows, replays, everything that’s within the new, exciting move to the SEC, putting that on a streaming platform was just something we really felt passionate about.”

Schools around the country have tried their hand at streaming platforms in recent years. Most of those centered on subscription models that have had mixed success. LHN, however, possesses a brand equity schools starting from scratch don’t have.

This version of LHN, too, Learfield CEO & President Cole Gahagan noted, will be centered on branded content as opposed to the subscription concept other schools have attempted.

“Longhorn Network certainly stands on its own in terms of its brand equity and its history,” Gahagan said. “But the framework of what we're building there -- a constant flow of unique content to fans, that often includes student athletes and is branded with the participation of brand partners -- that's the multimedia rights model of the future.”

Operationally, the new version of Longhorn Network will be designed to work like other popular streaming platforms Netflix, Hulu, etc. The backend technology and idea of a school operating its own service, particularly through Endeavor Streaming, however, has its ties far from the heart of Texas -- European soccer.

“European football has been doing this for a really long time,” Endeavor Streaming Chief Business Officer Matt Starker told Sports Business Journal of team-centered streaming platforms. “You're looking at the entrepreneurial spirit that all these football clubs have had because of the relegation concept. ... I think you're seeing a lot of the pro sports and universities saying, ‘We want to have direct relationships with our fans as well.’ They're beginning to modernize how they think about their connection and how they complement what their broadcast partnerships and social media distribution strategies are with their own streaming destinations. I think we're just taking a page out of the European sports playbook there.”

The shifting priorities around LHN also marries with the development of Texas Studios powered by Dell Technologies. The studio itself, like LHN’s shift, was needed amid the move to the SEC which necessitated Texas build control rooms to produce games for SEC Network --  efforts that were previously outsourced through third-parties.

Set to be completed this fall, the space will include four production control rooms, a central server room, shading room, three audio control rooms, an engineering operations center and a studio multipurpose space. There will also be an academic component to the space. Students in the Moody College of Communication at UT will access the studio as a learning lab, while there are plans to hire Texas undergrads to help produce and staff shows and other varying content created in the studio.

“Universities are theoretical based,” Del Conte said. “What we're trying to do is convince [people] here's a practical base to your education at the University of Texas.”

College sports are currently embroiled in discourse around new revenue streams and looking at ways to more creatively bring in dollars. Texas, for its efforts, has been at the forefront of those discussions through endeavors like its unique revenue sharing deal with Oak View Group and the recently opened Moody Center.

The new-look LHN isn’t necessarily a money-making effort, Del Conte explained, but the marketing and content created for Texas fans through the streaming network offers more exposure for Texas athletes across its 21 programs.

“We took a hard look at the landscape of what was out there existing today in college athletics, and then took a look at the overall landscape of where consumers go to get content,” said Drew Martin, Texas Executive Senior Associate AD for External Affairs. “But it all kind of began with this idea of ‘OK, we're moving to the SEC. What happens with Longhorn Network?’”

The service will be free to use. Instead of the subscription models other schools have tried, Texas and the Longhorn Network are going to tie the content to advertising on branded content.
