hindesky
Post from Nextdoor states......... "While at Walgreen's on Almeda @Southmore this afternoon, I noticed the front area looking a little bare. I asked an employee if they're getting ready for remodeling or closing down, he said they haven't been given an official date but they will be closing the store. A lot has to do with theft." Walgreens Boots Alliance is expected to shutter a “meaningful percent” of its 8,600 U.S. stores and back away from pursuing primary healthcare services to improve its bottom line, CEO Tim Wentworth told The Wall Street Journal this week. Wentworth said the company is in the process of identifying poorly performing locations — about a quarter, or more than 2,000, of its stores — and will decide how many to close over the next few years. Wentworth also said Walgreens would eye closing stores close to one another while reassigning most staff to remaining stores. https://www.bisnow.com/national/news/retail/walgreens-ready-to-chop-a-big-portion-of-its-more-than-8000-us-stores-124886

Specwriter
There is a 24-hour (drive through only after regular business hours) Walgreen's in my neighborhood that I can guess may be subject to a fair amount of theft (shoplifting). It it was decided to close the store it may make sense to keep the drive through for prescriptions and maybe OTC remedies. Pilfering would be nil (as long as the employees weren't doing it, but then it would be obvious) and their safety would be greatly increased. This particular Walgreen's has two drive through aisles which could easily be increased. A branch bank I use has five! There is a sign taped to the drive up window that stated employees take a "lunch" break from 1:30 'til 2:00 AM.

If this site ends up sold without the lease bogging it down, maybe a multifamily called the “Turn-Verein” with an art deco podium modeled after this could get built. A man can hope. 😊

Of course, if a mid-rise multifamily was built on this site there is a good chance it could have an exercise room for the residents. Indeed, one can hope.
houstontexasjack
The site did sell. “TYK Houston, LLC” was the entity that purchased it. It is associated with a person named Ming Ta Chou.
hindesky
Yesterday we wrote about the mass closures of pharmacies, and today comes news that Walgreens expanded its plan from 300 closures to 1,200. That means 1 in 7 Walgreens will shutter by 2027. The company’s Q3 earnings, released this morning, show revenue and sales are both up 6%, but Walgreens took a $3B loss from writing down a Chinese pharmaceutical company and home care provider CareCitrix. https://www.bisnow.com/national/news/retail/walgreens-to-close-1200-stores-amid-efforts-to-improve-financials-126290
