National Juneteenth Museum planned for Fort Worth

Recommended Posts

Of course it would make more sense for this to be in Galveston...

February 2024 (DMN)

The planned National Juneteenth Museum in Fort Worth picked up a big donation this week, bringing it closer to its $70 million fundraising goal.

The museum announced a donation of $2 million from Fort Worth-based Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway, which will have naming rights for part of the museum.

With Tuesday’s announcement, the museum has met the halfway point of its capital campaign. A groundbreaking is planned for later this year, and the museum is set to open in 2026.

Yeah, this absolutely should be in Galveston.  Major miss.

Interesting article about efforts to build a Juneteenth Museum on Galveston.

https://www.chron.com/gulf-coast/article/galveston-juneteenth-museum-plans-18541974.php

and a CBS news story about an already-existing Juneteenth Musuem (or at least a significant display within a museum) on Galveston.

"But at the same time, he points out, nobody would suggest building a National Alamo Museum in Amarillo."

How true!  Although I wouldn't put it past Greg Abbott.   He seems to bend over backwards to favor DFW over Houston.  Not sure how he feels about San Antonio.

Can we try to not let politics infect every thread in this forum?  Please?  AFAIK, neither Greg Abbott nor the State of Texas has had anything to do with the Fort Worth Juneteenth Museum.

FWIW, as far as I can tell, the "National" designation of the so-called "National Juneteenth Museum" is self-proclaimed (very much like DFW to do that).  Galveston should name their's either the Texas Juneteenth Museum or the International Juneteenth Museum.  😉

The State of Texas legislature pledged $1M and the Museum is asking for another $14M.  Look it up!

Put it in here in Space City, and it can be the Intergalactic Juneteenth Museum! :D
