Annunciation School At 1618 Texas Ave.

Recommended Posts

Well darn.  I didn't know there was a big, beautiful school on the campus of Annunciation Church in downtown.   Looking on Google Maps, it appears the famous Foley Mansion replaced the old school building. Maybe.

Weird. Is this the original location of the William Foley mansion? So where was the school?

I wonder the architect? Crazy architecture in 1907!  Maybe George Dickey?

My mother went to Incarnate Word Academy from 1950 to 1954.  Annunciation Catholic School was located directly behind the church at Jackson and Texas, facing Jackson, I think.  It was demolished in 1983, never rebuilt or relocated. I know there is a two story wood (or what looks like wood) structure at the site now but not sure if it's the William Foley Mansion.  Annunciation was boys and girls up to 8th grade.  From 9th to 12th grade the boys went to St. Thomas and the girls to Incarnate Word.

Thank you, this is cool!  I guess I could be wrong about remembering my mother saying the school was boys and girls.  Unless during this 1907 map it was all boys and by my mother's time was boys and girls.  I think the one marked "DORMITORY AND CLASS ROOMS" was the last to be demolished about 15 or 20 years ago.  I believe some here posted that its replacement looks more like a Public Storage building.

That was the building that created much heated discussion here when it was demolished. Here's a street view link of the building https://www.google.com/maps/@29.7558072,-95.3576153,3a,75y,34.93h,102.57t/data=!3m8!1e1!3m6!1shI0KA9wDXyPM6VwW3NfaHQ!2e0!5s20110701T000000!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fpanoid%3DhI0KA9wDXyPM6VwW3NfaHQ%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.share%26w%3D900%26h%3D600%26yaw%3D34.92752641824434%26pitch%3D-12.567494298842135%26thumbfov%3D90!7i13312!8i6656?coh=205410&entry=ttu
