^^^ thank you for taking the initiative to present to us HAIFERS the greatest TEASE that is known to mankind @Urbannizer  however, we all know that as ULTRA CONSERVATIVE as the officials at the HLS&R are, there is no way on earth, that they would be willing to allocate the necessary BILLIONS and BILLIONS of dollars... that it would take to bring forth this remarkable/magnificent development to the SCOPE and SCALE that is aforementioned illustrated.  heck, they can just barely manage NRG PARK as it currently stands.  i really hate to be so very pessimistic here, (as i would just LOVE for something of this particular nature to happen) however, i could NEVER EVER see this particular development coming into fruition here in this city at this particular time with the current ULTRA CONSERVATIVE officials that we have in place.  however, in a place that is very LIBERAL MINDED like LAS VEGAS... yes!  however, currently in our fair city of houston, NO WAY...

well, maybe we can just accept that it is a space that still provides amusement for some, even though the park sadly shut down nearly 20 years ago now.

IIRC the non-compete clause at Toyota Center has long expired and I spy an arena replacement for NRG Arena. Might it also house an NHL hockey franchise? Could add additional revenue to the overall complex. Also a competing bid might force Tilman’s hand or beat him to the punch.

It may have expired. Regardless, it did not restrict everyone and all entities from building a new arena anywhere in Houston. It only restricts the Sports Authority from doing so.

Considering the age of the Toyota Center itself, Tillman may consider moving himself. Though I would consider this proposal in particular an attempt to woo an NHL franchise, like the floundering Arizona Coyotes.

Was aware of that but I’d expect HCHSA to be involved in the construction of a new arena at the Astroworld site. With a connection to rail via Smith Lands stop, this could be a viable option to attract an NHL tenant as well as replacing NRG arena. This would add new revenue streams, exactly what the tenants are looking for.

This. I think it’s an attempt to lure the Coyotes or an expansion franchise.

I have some clothes that are older than Toyota Center and the NRG Stadium and there's already talk about how they need to be replaced?

NRG Arena (formerly AstroArena) is a totally different place from NRG Stadium.

No one has mentioned replacing NRG Stadium or Toyota Center

Not sure what will come of this…reported by HBJ and no mention of the Astrodome.

Officials take first step in planning for NRG Park’s future with approval of design studies

A plan for the future of NRG Park is one step closer to coming to fruition.

The Harris County Sports & Convention Corp. approved multiple agreements for consulting services and design studies for NRG Stadium and NRG Center during a recent board meeting. HCSCC CEO and Executive Director Ryan Walsh said the agreements are the first step in the planning process for the future of NRG Park. The organization is collaborating with the Houston Texans, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and Harris County to make significant improvements to the 350-acre development.

The process began when Harris County Commissioners Court approved an agenda item in October 2023 to develop plans to “re-envision, re-energize and plan for the future of the NRG Park complex.” Conversations between HCSCC and the Texans and RodeoHouston — the two tenants of NRG Stadium — have been ongoing since then, HCSCC previously said.

HCSCC approved seven different agreements with six firms for various services during the June 18 board meeting, according to the meeting minutes obtained by HBJ.

The organization approved a $100,000 agreement for consulting services with Frisco, Texas-based Convention Sports and Leisure. The city of Houston previously worked with CSL when it sought to build Minute Maid Park and Toyota Center downtown. Most recently, the city of Sugar Land worked with the firm as it looked to build Smart Financial Centre.

HCSCC approved separate agreements with Dallas-based HKS, Kansas City-based Populous, Cleveland-based OSports and Kansas City-based Manica Architecture for design studies for NRG Stadium. Each of the agreements totaled $50,000.

Walsh did not provide a timeline for getting those studies back and moving forward with a project.

Yeah.  Disappointed at didn’t mention the Dome or the Arena.   I’m hoping it’s just bad journalism.

RodeoHouston needs a new NRG Arena that includes hundreds of thousands of square feet and VIP space to move forward with extending their lease at NRG Park. They're also considering how to use the Astroworld site and are not removing leaving the park if their needs aren't met as an option. The park itself has roughly a half billion dollars in deferred maintenance. That may take some creativity to finance so hopefully urban development is part of that. Just imagine branded residences for the Texans and rodeo like the apartment complex that recently opened in Arlington near Globe Life!

Where are they going to go?  Rice Stadium?  I don’t see the Rodeo building another 80,000 seat covered stadium in Houston.  Silly comment from HLSR.

They answered that in response to a direct question about it.  I'm not surprised given negotiations are ongoing, why give away all leverage at this point?

Talks of a needing a new stadium should start to ramp up here as NRG approaches that 25-30 year mark.

Perfect timing because the Texans appear to be peaking for that projected window meaning they are more likely to get what they want.

But...do they build it downtown or build a trio of Football stadiums sitting next to each other in NRG park?

How about they just maintain and renovate the one they have. There is zero reason a stadium should only last 25-30 years.

Why not build a replacement Astro Arena facility inside the Astrodome with the exterior walls surrounding the arena filled with mixed use development and maybe hotel rooms on the upper levels?

There is an example of this that exists. 02 Arena inside Millennium Dome.

Would take care of a lot of issues with one project.

Save the Dome?

Add mixed use development on site?

Replace Astro Arena?

And this still leaves the Astroworld site to be redeveloped into something like The Battery in Atlanta or Hollywood Park at SoFi Stadium
