Favorite Houstonian Ever

Recommended Posts

Jesse "Mr. Houston" Jones. That's a legend. Runners up? For me of course, Tilman. He's from the island but he resides in river oaks. Mac too. He's a real community guy. Id vote for Mac if he ever ran for mayor. . .

Yeah, Jesse Jones is hard to beat. Of all Houstonians, he arguably had the greatest impact on the United States' historical development...especially on ours.

Ahh, I LOVE that statue! Imagine if it could move and talk like an animatronic.

I'll have to say Tilman as well. I see him as one of our only hopes in getting a theme park built. Someone from within. This is his home and he's got what it takes to make it happen. He can create a whole new brand of parks with the flagship being in the Houston area. If he'll ever make it happen.

J.Howard Marshall, you have to hand it to the old guy, made mountains of cash and started with nothing. Then at 88 yrs. old, he hooked up with the WORST Hooker that money could buy, and became more famous for that, than the fact he was one of the best businessmen in his field. God I love Houston !

:D Aaaaaaaaw. Anna Nichol looks so sweet in that picture. What a nice young lady.

Maybe not so nice. Notice how she has her claw....errrr.....nails dug into the old man's shoulder? Kind of like. "you'd better be smiling for the camera old man!"..... :D

My short list would include:

William Fairfax Gray

Sidney Sherman

Edward Mandell House

William Marsh Rice

George Herman

Ima Hogg

Howard Hughes Sr.

Howard Hughes Jr.

Monroe D Anderson

Denton Cooley

Michael DeBakey

However, Jesse Jones is by far the most outstanding Houstonian ever.

I can't believe I left out howard hughes. He was gonna top my list, but he could do whatever he wanted cuz no matter what he always had has dads tool fortune to fall back on. Give me an endless supply of money and I could make a fortune too. Still charismatic nonetheless. His story though is amazing. Towards the end when he became a recluse is the most interesting part. Isn't monty burns somewhat based on him? Have u seen the time magazine with him on the cover after he died? Google it, its hilarious. He looks like a kung fu master. . .

Howard Hughes Jr.

The notable locations in Houston of the Howard Hughes Family:

1404 Crawford: Howard Hughes, Sr., and his pregnant wife lived in a house located within the confines of the present day Toyota Center(believe it or not). The mother was afraid of the mosquitos and moved to Humble to deliver Howard, Jr. in 1905.

McKinney street: The Hughes family lived on McKinney street in Eastwood, but the exact address is debatable.

2nd street & Girard: The original Sharp-Hughes Tool company was located here on present day University of Houston Downtown campus. There is a art/sculpture that depicts the three headed drill bit that Howard, Sr. invented (1909) and patented.

1700 Main street: The Hughes family lived in the Beaconsfield apt/hotel in 1916(room 2A). Howard was 11 years old. The hotel still stands and has been renovated.

3921 Yoakum street: The Hughes family home was built in 1918 and Howard, Jr., spent his teenage years here. The home transferred to the University of St. Thomas in 1953. They currently teach theology out of his house. Howard kept the home so that his aunt could live there after he went to Calfornia in 1925.

1212 Main street(Humble building): Howard Hughes, Sr., died in his office on the 5th floor in 1924.

2525 Washington Avenue(Glenwood cemetery): Howard, Jr., Sr., and his aunt are all buried in a plot long the western edge of the cemetary.

Gotta say the most famous local (adopted) who has made an impression on me was Hakeem Olajawon. I got to know him a tiny tiny bit in college, was a fan forever, met him again socially a couple of times over the years. He was really the head dude in my generation of foreign-born major league sports stars. His story is (and his stats) are amazing. I will never forget being at the Richmond Arms for games when we won the championships. It's not exactly Jesse Jones and history, but it definitely defines my time as native Houstonian.

I've spent some time with Hakeem on several occasions, and can say that he's a super guy. Of course you never saw a guy who was more of a wheeler/dealer. he won't pay full price for anything. Great guy though.
