hmm...now that i have thought about it...

HAIF rhyming with wife sounds too stern (especially of you say it quickly :o )

HAIF rhyming with waif is more southern - like "haaaaay-F" :D

i've always pronounced it as hIfe (rhymes with wife). i was in haifa, israel for one day in '81. guess that influenced my pronunciation as well. it never occurred to me to call it hAyf. is saigon pronounce sAygon? hAyf sound like hayfever, hIfe sounds more like a place or a group. IMHO B)

But you're also using other countries' spelling and pronounciation rules, since this is english, that doesn't count. :)
