LTAWACS
You ought to be more cautious about making categorical statements of fact. I cited examples of two recent mayors of Houston that when they've shown up to the same events as I have, have remained there for the duration. They promptly leave when the event is over, but not before because that is rude. They are persons of honor but are approachable.Fact is, most humans would scoff at the idea of labeling mayors of Houston as persons of honor. In fact I would wager that most would avoid calling them persons at all.
ChannelTwoNews
Found this in Nancy's Sunday real estate column. http://www.chron.com/business/real-estate/article/A-downtown-implosion-is-a-real-estate-rarity-4045726.php Quote Student housing at Texas Southern University is about to get an upgrade. A $41.5 million dormitory, the first new dorm to be built there in decades, is set to break ground next May. The seven-story, 215,000-square-foot structure will have 800 beds on the eastern edge of campus. It will have street-level retail and a rooftop terrace. HarrisonKornberg Architects, is designing the complex in collaboration with Lord, Aeck & Sargent. Over the last two years, the university has been working on a pilot program in which freshmen live on campus and participate in community, cultural and educational events. "We're seeing the difference this concept makes in our retention rates and student successes in class," TSU President John M. Rudley said in a statement. "On-campus housing can result in an increase in our graduation rates and keep students focused on graduating on time." The facility will allow the university to house nearly all of its incoming freshmen on campus. Today, 1,300 students live in six campus housing complexes. TSU has 9,500 students and is celebrating its 85th anniversary this year. The 150-acre campus is in the Third Ward at Cleburne and Ennis. JLWM8609
I'm on the eastern edge of TSU's campus right now, and I'm trying to figure where the footprint of the new dorms will be. I wonder if the old Lanier Hall dorms will be demolished to make room?
KinkaidAlum
Glad to see TSU building new dorms. Would love to see TSU improve. One of the best ways to do so is to give more kids a traditional college experience. Numerous studies show that kids who live on campus are MUCH more likely to graduate than commuters. UH will have nearly 8,000 beds on campus next fall. Would love to see TSU and UH work together to promote some sort of retail/dining/entertainment district along Scott St. to compliment the light rail.

HoustonIsHome
Good for TSU, good for UH and good for Houston. Improving TSU is only a plus for UH, and Houston could surely do with a boost in the education department Edited January 29, 2014 by HoustonIsHome

As demand increases inside the loop, that may happen organically anyway. In a few decades we might be looking at "Heights South" in the area. You'll know we're there when Walmart tries to build and get's picketed by RUDH.
Urbannizer
http://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/houston/article/TSU-students-adjust-to-hotel-after-learning-dorm-6470081.php?cmpid=btfpm Ferguson soon learned that she would be staying in a hotel for the next couple of months, along with about 100 other students, while TSU rushes to finish construction of a dormitory that was supposed to open this month. Officials say the rainy spring and summer delayed construction on the 800-room dorm, which is now set to open in November. The school is paying for rooms at the Wyndham Hotel in the Texas Medical Center and is busing students to and from campus until the dorm opens. EllenOlenska
I believe in the foreground (to the left) are the TSU dorms. From the new UH stadium during a ridiculously long rain delay.
KinkaidAlum
So funny you posted this. I noticed the form yesterday from our tailgate spot. I didn't notice it last year (maybe it hadn't been topped out?) but it makes it's presence known now on Scott Street.
HoustonIsHome
Nice pic Ellen. The skyline in the background is awesome. Downtown looks like a beast. It's laughable when people compare uptown to downtown. The density of buildings is just not there.
Urbannizer
TSU Technology Building http://www.theldnet.com/project/tsu-technology-building/ Texas Southern University (TSU) demolished the previous Leonard N. O. Spearman Technology Building, due to not only to damages sustained from Hurricane Ike but also because of the age and condition of the facility. The Technology Building replacement is a 100,000 SF, four-story, state-of-the-art facility. It includes a 25,000 SF mechanical penthouse and a 100-foot transmitting tower for the university’s radio station. Adjacent to the building is a one-story, high bay industrial building to house laboratories, simulators, and other training equipment.

Urbannizer
http://www.asumag.com/new-construction/texas-southern-university-begins-construction-new-library Texas Southern University has broken ground on a $43 million Library Learning Center on its Houston campus. The university says the five-story building will span 137,000 square feet and is expected to be completed in summer 2019. This new Library Learning Center will serve as an intellectual hub not only for the university, but for the community at large. Students, academics and library patrons will have an array of resources at their fingertips,” says university President Austin A. Lane. The university’s distance and online education divisions, administrative offices, support services and a board room will be housed in the new center. The library will provide an array of resources for upper-level, graduate and professional researchers. TSU freshmen will receive a range of dedicated academic services to bolster their first-year curriculum. Library patrons will have high-tech access to materials and more efficient methods for data collection.
