TheNiche
Check out the most recent HoustonBusiness report from the Federal Reserve. In real terms (adjusted for the cost of living), Houston has the highest per capita income out of thirteen peer cities, which include Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Washington D.C. I would've liked to have gotten the numbers for Minneapolis, Phoenix, Denver, and Seattle too, but this is interesting and informative enough.Growth of our personal income also exceeds the average annual growth for that of all metropolitan areas in the U.S.; in fact, between 1999 and 2004, while the rest of the nation saw a decline in personal income from rents, interest, and dividends, Houstonians experienced a percent gain that was higher than the absolute value of the average national-level loss. Additionally, it seems that the share of income generated by the self-employed or business owners in Houston is more than twice the national average for all major metropolitan areas.Impressive stuff. 713 To 214
Not a surprising statistic, at all. The oil industry has been performing well, here lately.

The data is mostly from 2004, back when things were still slow/stagnant.
