Samsoner
OK, here's the scoop. My friends and I moved to Houston and instead of buying an expensive condo 5 minutes from downtown we decided to pool our money together and buy a house in the suburban areas. All of us are single and we plan on staying that way until our education is complete and we're off and running in our respective careers. But that's later on. Right now it's the weekend and I want to explore Houston, but I want to do it in the best way possible. My friends are homebodies..their idea of a relaxing weekend is watching Netflix dvds and playing video games, so it will be just me driving around.I'm interested in learning: Places to go (besides shopping at the Galleria) for single, twentysomething adults. None of us are family people, and so far in our area there are things to do for kids and their families.Specific neighborhoods or townhouse complexes to avoid because of the high crime. Where I came from, mistaken-identity shootings were very common and I don't want to make the mistake of driving around in an area that can get me carjacked or worse.Specific websites (besides chron.com) for people interested in doing something on the weekend.Currently the only plan that I have right now is to drive towards downtown with my map and familiarize myself with the Museum District and other areas. I'll need to find a barbershop as well. Thanks!

mumbles
Mountain biking at Memorial Park is always good. I generally try to stay away from town, I like it out here in suburbia. Cullen park and the dog parks keep my furkids and me entertained. What side of Houston are you on?
Sebastian De La Ghetto!
Pick up a Houston Press to find out whats going on that weekend. ATLbuyer
Get on a tour bus if you can. It will orient you to a new city and you'll have better landmarks when you drive or walk.
Subdude
Get a bike and ride around to see different neighborhoods, especially inside the loop. Houston is flat and it is easy to cover most of the city on side streets without a lot of traffic, making this a fantastic biking city. Use your judgement, but there are few neighborhoods where you have to worry about being attacked, although the far Southwest is supposed to be pretty dicey now. Avoid the Galleria area due to heavy traffic and lack of side streets. That is probably the least bike-friendly part of town. And welcome to Houston! The Great Hizzy!
The Heights... antique shopping on 19th Street and then cutesy dining on White Oak Drive while enjoying a small town atmosphere. Later, explore some 100-plus year old homes that have been fully restored, bastardized or just flat out la-dee-dahed into complete snobbery. Cruise Bayland Avenue and enjoy the juxtaposition of overbearing oaks, cypress and so on with classic home designs, even the handful of McMansions that have slipped in over the past few years. houstonfella
I've been in Houston all my adult life. I find it amazing that there are things I didn't know about here. I just discovered the hike and bike trail on the bayou close to my suburban home. Native Houstonians sometimes don't even know what the city has to offer, but there is so much going on that you won't have to worry about having nothing to do. By the way, Houston isn't the fattest city any more. Las Vegas is. Houston is, I think, 6th. Now how did we trim up that quickly???? Aren't these magazines and their "lists" strange things? It's free on Thursday. It is also only one of two museums housing a huge collection of art from the Met while they are doing renovations. When it leaves here it will be going to Berlin so I would strongly suggest a visit early on a Thursday in order to view it for free-otherwise you'll have to spill for a trip to NYC in order to see the art of Renoir, Millet, C Edited February 13, 2007 by nmainguy
